Protection for connectors on the B6304F engine

The engine management system connectors/components should be cleaned and protected if oxidation or driveability problems are encountered. If diagnostic trouble codes (DTCS) have been recorded although no fault is detected, connectors/components should also be cleaned and protected. The application of grease to connectors improves their long term reliability.

Material P/N

Rust remover 1161435-1 or 1161034-2
Low-temperature grease 1161417-9 or 1161236-3

Caution:
Do not use rust remover or grease on the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors.

B6304F ENGINE

The Motronic engine control module (ECM), engine speed sensor (RPM sensor), camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) and mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor), idle air control valve (IAC valve), throttle position sensor (TP sensor), EGR temperature sensor, knock sensor (x2) and power stage (x2) connectors should be protected.

Caution:
Care should be taken not to damage or misplace the seals when disconnecting connectors.

Greasing of the above connectors has been introduced in production from the following chassis no.:

960: 033150 (4 door) 960: 012980 (5 door)

Procedure

Turn ignition off

Remove fuse 24 to avoid damage to the ECM when disconnecting and reconnecting the module.

Remove the ECM

Remove control module connector cover to expose the rear of the connector.

Clean connector

Spray connector thoroughly with rust remover.

Grease terminals

Press grease into connectors terminals 10, 27, 28 and 48 (located in mid-section of connector). Entry of grease into adjoining terminals is of no consequence.

Check grease filling

Inspect rear of connector to ensure that spaces around terminals have been filled completely.

Replace cover. Reinstall control module and connector.

Remove MAF sensor connector

WARNING:
Use of protective eyewear is recommended.

Clean connector on MAF sensor, scraping both sides of pins carefully with a small screwdriver. Blow clean with compressed air.

Note:
Ensure that pins are straight after cleaning.

Remove RPM sensor and camshaft position connectors (K and H respectively)

Remove connectors for:

1. IAC valve

2. TP sensor

3. Knock sensor (x 2)

4. Power stage (x 2)

5. EGR-temperature sensor (where applicable)

Clean connectors

Spray connector halves (male and female) with rust remover.

Caution:
Do not use rust remover or grease on the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) connectors.

Grease connectors

Press grease into connectors directly from tube.

Check that all spaces around connector terminals are filled.

Do not fill protective boots.

Reconnect connectors

Ensure that all seals are in proper position prior to reconnection.

Reinstall fuse 24.

Start engine and check on-board diagnostic system to ensure that no DTCs have been stored.
