Replacing Control Arm (Aluminum) and / or Control Arm Bushings


Special Tools:
- 999 5481
- 999 5482
- 999 5483
- 999 2050



NOTE: The control arm is aluminum on cars manufactured up to and including December 1993. From January 1994 the control arm is made of steel.







- Remove the three ball joint nuts to the control arm.

- Remove the two screws in the control arm.

- Remove control arm.

- Remove plastic cover from the control arm.

- Clean rust off the outer bushing sleeves.







- Note the position of the outer sleeved in relation to the control arm.

- Press the bushings out.

- Use Drift 999 5481 and Counterhold 999 5482.

Installation








- Mark the new bushings as noted previously.

- Press window into position.

- Use Drift 999 5481 and Counterhold 999 5482.







- Check bushing position.

- Use a Gauge 999 5483. Ensure that the gauge is fixed in the ball joint seat on the control arm.

- The gauge check area should be a distance of 1.0 mm to 0 mm from the bushing inner sleeve, see illustration. Adjust of necessary.

- The gauge can be used on both left and right sides.







- Check that the ball joint seat in the control arm is clean.

- Install the control arm.

- Install new screws and nuts in frame. Do not tighten the screws yet.

- Install ball joint with the new nuts.

NOTE: The ball joint screws do not need to be screwed out.

- Tighten to 18 Nm and angle-tighten to 120°.

- Tighten the nuts in order from the inside outwards. Use a Protractor 951 2050.
- Rust protect the area between the ball joint, link and nuts carefully, using plenty of compound. Use Rust Inhibitor 1161432-8.

- Lower the car.

- Bounce the car a few times.

- Tighten control arms nuts in the sub-frame to 65 Nm, the angle tighten to 120°.

NOTE: It is important for the bushing life that the control arm is tightened while under load.
