Centering of Fuel Tank

Centering of fuel tank

In certain rare cases, it may be necessary to move the tank forward to center the fuel level transmitter nut in the hole in the body panel when removing the transmitter.

If fuel tank is installed too far to rear:

Fuel level transmitter nut will not be centered in hole in body, making it difficult to undo nut. In this case, tank must be loosened and moved forward as described.

Note:
Do not cut body panel to enlarge hole.

Jack up car

Undo tank straps and push tank forward manually as far as possible.

Lower car (with straps still loosened).

Undo fuel level transmitter nut

(Procedure described in service manual.)

If tank needs to be moved further forward while nut is being undone, use implement such as a hammer handle as lever between fuel pump unit nut and body panel, taking care to ensure that neither component is damaged.

Removal of nut is also facilitated by undoing tank straps and lowering tank below body panel.

Jack up car

Tighten tank straps.

Push tank forward while tightening to ensure that fuel level transmitter nut is centered as far as possible in hole.

Lower car.
