Replacing Crash Sensor
Starting with the 1989 model year, a new ground point has-been provided for the crash sensor. The ground connection is now screwed directly onto the crash sensor bracket. The new crash sensor is the only replacement version available. Since the crash sensor is grounded through the bracket, it is extremely important that the bracket makes good electrical contact with the body.
REQUIRED PARTS: Description Part No. Quantity
Crash Sensor, 740/760 271244-6 1
Incl: bracket, new screws and lock washers
Crash Sensor, 780 271245-3 1
Incl: bracket, new screws and lock washers
NOTE: These service kits are designed for use on 1987-88 M/Y vehicles but can also be used for 1989 M/Y on. However, when used for vehicles from M/Y 1989, the existing screws and lock washers in the vehicle should be used. Do not use the new screws and washers provided in the service kit for vehicles from M/Y 1989.
WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE CRASH SENSOR FROM BRACKET. DO NOT DISCONNECT CONNECTOR FROM CRASH SENSOR.
Note: The crash sensor has an identification number which must be used when ordering new parts.

Remove battery ground cable
Loosen driver's seat and lean it back
Remove screws holding driver seat rails. Disconnect connector to seat. Push seat back. Fold back carpet, remove air duct.
Disconnect connectors at center console

IMPORTANT: Never disconnect connector from crash sensor. This is vital to ensure good contact.
If necessary, cut away any plastic tape under bracket
Cut around bracket with knife (without damaging paint).
Remove standby power unit and crash sensor
Remove connector from standby power unit and remove unit by lifting clip.
Lift out crash sensor, including bracket and wiring harness.
Remove cut out pieces of tape, touchup paint if necessary.
Screw new crash sensor and bracket in place.
Lock washers should be used on both sides of bracket in those places where tape has been cut away. Torque screws to 4 N-m. = 35 in.lbs.
Connect connectors to standby power unit
Connect connectors at center console*. On 780, also connect connectors for seat belt tensioners.
Connect connectors to standby power unit. Attach unit to bracket.
*(Old ground lead from central relays to center console connectors may remain in place, unused).
Switch ignition on; then reconnect battery ground cable.
If SRS indicator lamp lights up (fault code displayed)
(If fault code is displayed when ignition is switched on, battery was probably connected and ignition switched on while connectors were disconnected).
To cancel fault code:
Display fault code again (ground test terminal for 2 - 5 seconds).
Then ground test terminal 3 times within a 1.5 - 5 second period for at least 0.25 seconds each time.
Note: Spade connectors should be connected to both ends of lead used for grounding. Each grounding should be distinct and not too short.
Note: Do not switch off ignition between displaying fault code and cancelling code.
Lamp will go off for 4 seconds, then go on again for 3 seconds to confirm cancellation and then go out.
If SRS lamp stays on, a fault has not been remedied. Display fault code again and remedy fault. Refer to separate SRS Service Manual as necessary. Cancel fault code again.
