Altitude Compensator: Description and Operation
Fig. 152 ALTITUDE COMPENSATING REGULATOR SYSTEM:
The altitude compensating regulator system adjusts the amount of fuel injected in proportion to the oxygen content in the air. At high altitudes, with less oxygen in the air, the proportion of fuel injected would be to great, causing black exhaust smoke and a lot of hydrocarbons. Fig. 152.
COMPONENTS:
----------------
ANERIOID UNIT (reference pressure sensor)
The aneroid unit is influenced by vacuum from the engine vacuum pump and atmospheric air pressure. It maintains a constant vacuum in the lower chamber of the smoke limiter.
SMOKE LIMITER
The smoke limiter contains a diaphragm which is connected to the injection pump control rod. The diaphragm causes the injection pump control rod to move upward with increasing altitude, which will decrease the injected fuel quantities.
