Procedures
Front seat rubbing between seat upholstery and various plastic components.
Neatly apply teflon or felt tape as follows:
- inside of seat belt buckle (1A) or mechanical belt tensioner (1). Apply 3 strips as shown. Ensure a professional appearance.
- top of side compartment (2). Place teflon tape along contact area (shaded) and fold over edge (arrow).
- inside of lumbar support adjuster covers (3)
- inside of backrest adjuster covers (4). Manual seat, tape hatched areas. Power seat, tape outer edge contact surfaces.
Note: Mechanical belt tensioner can also rattle on vehicles so equipped.
Remove seat from car. (See TP 31418/1).
Place O-rings (5), p/n 3541742-7, approx. 25 mm(1 in.) from ends of belt tensioner torsion bar. O-rings will prevent bar from rattling against surrounding plastic tube.
Noise can also originate between seat frame and support.
Sub-frame, manual seat
Remove seat from car. (See TP 31127/1).
Height adjustment lever (6) can cause noise by rubbing against spring counterbalance. Bend lever upwards by hand when seat is in lowermost position.
1988--> models:
Replace bushings (7a) with new, white plastic bushings, p/n 1373920-6.
Replace 4 spring washers (7b) with new washers, p/n 949903-9, and add 4 flat washers, p/n 966814-6. Tighten screw to 20 N-m (15 ft.lb).
Note: Position spring washers as illustrated.
Replace rails (8) if height adjustment holes in upper section are excessively worn. Excessive play between upper and lower rails may be due to displacement of balls.
Note: Latch mechanical belt tensioner if applicable.
Move seat backward and forward two or three times between front and rear end positions to reseat balls. Replace rails if this does not correct problem. Also replace seat frame if problem persists despite above measures.
Sub-frame, manual and electrically-operated seats:
Place a length of shrink tubing over the top of the guide spigot (9). Shrink in position with a heat gun.
Place a length of shrink tubing over the unthreaded section of the inner bolt (10). Shrink tubing in position.
Wrap teflon tape around the spring attachment points
(11) in the seat frame.
Electrically operated seat, 740, 760:
The clips(arrows) holding the upholstery at the rear of the seat can rub against the frame when the height of the seat is adjusted. Shorten the clips slightly.
Grab handle blank covers on driver's side
Remove covers, apply teflon tape and resecure covers.
Between belt attachment frame and B-pillar cover
Remove frame and attach teflon tape to rear side. Reinstall frame.
Rear headrest, 4-door models
Mount tubes in vise and squeeze carefully. Goal is to just eliminate side-to-side play. Make several gradual tries in order to eliminate noise without interfering with headrest adjustment.
Rear seat cushion attachment loops, 4-door models
Release seat cushion from floor mounting. Compress brackets to ensure that cushion is tight against base. Wrap teflon tape around loops.
Plastic cover, rear seat, 5-door models
Apply four strips(A,B,C,D) of butyl tape inside each hinge cover.
