Pull Rod and Detent Replacement M46/47

Reverse Pull Rod And Reverse Gear Detent Replacement
1. Remove ash tray and holder assembly and frame around gear shift lever.
2. Disconnect gear shift lever cover from the floor.
3. Disconnect connectors at gear shift lever cover.
4. Remove switch in gear shift lever knob.





5. Separate gear shift lever upper and lower parts. Use a drift to tap out lock pin.

CAUTION: Hold the lever to avoid exerting force on the transmission and possibly damaging it.

6. Remove gear shift lever knob. Position lever in a vise equipped with soft jaws and tap loose knob.
7. Early version (steel pull rod and detent rod): Remove reverse detent knob. Pull out reverse pull rod, detent sleeve and spring.

Late version (plastic pull rod and detent sleeve): Remove spring and detent sleeve. Pull out reverse pull rod and separate from knob.





8. Early version: Install new reverse pull rod. Bend out end of reverse pull rod approx 20° to minimize rattle. Install detent sleeve and spring. Apply a drop of locking fluid (P/N 277916-3) to the screw. Install the reverse pull rod in the gear shift lever. Install the reverse gear detent knob.

Late version: Install new parts in reverse order as in step 7 (Late version).
9. Install gear shift lever knob. Position gear shift lever in a vise equipped with soft jaws. Carefully tap knob into position.
10. Attach gear shift lever upper part to lower part. Install lock pin.





11. Check reverse gear detent operation. Engage first gear. If necessary adjust the clearance between the detent plate and the detent screw. Correct clearance is 1.0-1.5 mm (0.04-0.06 in). Also check clearance in second gear position.
12. Connect wires to switch in gear shift lever knob.
13. Install switch.
14. Install gear shift lever cover.
15. Reconnect the connector at gear shift lever cover.
16. Install frame.
17. Install ash tray and holder assembly.
