Subframe with Steering Gear

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Ball joint puller (3287 A)

• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)

• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Removing

- Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and remove the ignition key so that the steering wheel lock engages.

Vehicle with "Keyless Access" Keyless Locking and Starting System

- Switch the ignition off and open the driver's door so the steering wheel lock locks.

Continuation for All Vehicles

- Remove the battery and the battery tray.

- Disconnect the wire - 1 - from the E-box.






- Disconnect the harness connector - 1 -.






- Remove the cap nut and ground cable

- Open the cover - 2 -

- Remove the wiring harness from the bracket on the longitudinal member so that it can be removed together with the steering gear.

- Remove the footwell trim panel - 1 -.






- Remove the bolt - arrow - from the universal joint - 1 -. Then remove the universal joint in - direction of arrow -.






- Remove the front wheels.

- Remove the lower noise insulation.

- Disconnect the connector from the oil level thermal sensor (G266) and disconnect the wire on the subframe.

- Remove exhaust system bracket from subframe- arrows -.






- Remove the left and right nut - 1 - from the coupling rod - 3 -.






- Remove the coupling rod - 3 - from the stabilizer bar - 2 - on the left and right sides.

- Remove the nuts - arrows - on left and right side of vehicle.






- Remove the control arm from the ball joint.

- Loosen nut of track rod ball joint, but do not unscrew yet.


To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.

- Press off track rod ball joint from wheel bearing housing using (3287A) and now unscrew nut.






- Remove pendulum support from transmission, unscrew bolts - 14 - to do so.






- Subframe, securing, refer to => [ Subframe and Consoles, Securing ] Front Suspension.

- Place (V.A.G 1383 A) under subframe.






- Place, for example, a piece of wood - 1 - between (V.A.G 1383 A) and subframe.

- Remove the bolts - 9 - and - 10 - and slightly lower the subframe with the brackets. Observe electrical wires when doing this.






- Slowly lower the (V.A.G 1383 A) while guiding the steering gear wiring.

- Secure the subframe on the (V.A.G 1383 A) with the accompanying strap.






Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse sequence.

- Install the noise insulation.

- Install the wheels. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Tightening Specification ] [1][2]Specifications.

- Install the battery tray and the battery.
