Cylinder Head Assembly Overview

• To remove the cylinder head the engine must first be removed. Refer to --> [ Engine, Removing ] Engine Removing.

• If an exchange cylinder head is installed, all contact surfaces between bearing elements, roller rocker levers and cam running surfaces of camshaft must be oiled before installing cylinder head cover.

• The plastic protectors installed to protect the open valves must only be removed immediately before fitting the cylinder head.

• When replacing the cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, coolant must be replaced.





1 Cap

• Replace gaskets if damaged.

2 Cylinder head cover

3 10 Nm

• With spacer sleeve and seal.

• Replace seal if damaged.

4 Lifting eye

• With retaining plate for knock sensor connector bolted on.

5 23 Nm

6 Intake manifold support

7 23 Nm

8 10 Nm

9 Connecting piece

• When changing from aluminum to plastic connecting pieces, pay attention to the bolt allocation.

10 Gasket

• Replace.

• Note installation position.

11 Chain tensioner, 40 Nm

• For camshaft timing chain.

• Only rotate engine with chain tensioner installed.

12 Seal

• Replace

13 Seal

• For camshaft adjustment valve 1 (N205) and camshaft adjustment valve 1 (exhaust) (N318)

• Replace if damaged or leaking.

• Installing, refer to --> [ Camshaft Adjuster Valve Seal, Installing ] Service and Repair.

14 Cover

• Can be removed and installed with the engine installed.

• Coat sealing surfaces with sealant (D 176 501 A1).

15 Bracket

16 8 Nm

17 23 Nm

18 Guide rail

• For camshaft timing chain.

19 23 Nm

• Insert using locking fluid (D 000 600 A2).

20 Connecting piece

• Bolt on in front of cylinder head installation.

21 O-ring

• Replace.

22 Seal

• Replace.

23 Cylinder head gasket

• Metal gasket.

• Replace.

• Replacing cylinder head gasket, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

• After replacing, replace coolant.

24 Cylinder head

• Check for distortion, refer to --> [ Checking Cylinder Head for Distortion ]

• Removing and installing, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

• After replacing, replace coolant.

25 Tensioning element

• For ribbed belt.

• Removing and installing ribbed belt, refer to --> [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

26 Cylinder head bolt

• Replace.

• Before assembling, coat the bolt with locking compound (D 197 300 A2), refer to --> [ Apply to each cylinder head bold in the head contact surface and insert the bolts. ] Cylinder Head.

• Observe installation instructions and sequence for loosening and tightening, refer to --> [ Cylinder Head ] Cylinder Head.

27 Cylinder head cover gasket

• Replace if damaged or leaking.

• Note installation position.

• Feeler gauge

Max. permissible distortion: 0.05 mm
