Removing

- Only if there are no marks, mark position of rear driveshaft sections on constant velocity joints with paint (arrows -A- and -B-).
- Separate driveshaft from rear final drive and tie up.
- Place transmission jack VAG 1383A with universal transmission mounting 1359/2 under final drive and support final drive.

- Remove transmission support securing bolts (arrows).
- Carefully lower final drive until flange is accessible.
- Mark position of pinion shaft securing nut with paint.

Determining dimension -a- and dimension -b

- Measure as indicated and note measurements.
- Distance of flange to pinion shaft = Dimension -a
- Distance of flange to pinion shaft securing nut = Dimension -b
- Remove securing nut, counting number of rotations. Note number.

- Mount counter-hold tool 3028 and screw on securing nut for pinion shaft.

Note: Re-use previous hex nut to secure flange to pinion shaft. If another nut is used the original installation position cannot be determined again.

- Place drip tray underneath.

- Pull off flange with VW 391.
- A - Two M8 x 30 hex bolts inserted into flange

- Pull out seal.

Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse sequence. Note the following:

- Replace O-ring behind flange.
- Apply gear oil to circumference of seal.
- Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.

- Drive new seal in onto stop in rear axle housing taking care not to tilt seal.

- Drive driveshaft flange onto pinion shaft until securing nut can be installed.
- Clean threads on pinion shaft and flange nut free of grease and coat thinly with D 000 600.
- Insert previous hex nut and tighten to position marked.

Note: The number of turns when screwing on must be the same as for unscrewing.

Perform check measurement dimension -a- and dimension -b

Note:
^ Seal -1- must be installed when measuring.
^ The hex nut must be exactly on the marked position again.
^ Maximum deviation from the original measurement + O.3 mm.

- Secure hex nut.
- Position final drive in installed position again.
- Bolt final drive to transmission support.
- If position of driveshaft to driveshaft flange was marked before removal, reinstall driveshaft in same position.
- If marks are present on driveshaft, determine radial run-out at driveshaft flange.
- Fasten driveshaft to rear final drive.
- Check rear final drive oil.
