Ceramic Sheathed Element Glow Plugs, Removing, Installing And Checking

Recommended Special Tools And Equipment







- 3220 hinged socket







- V.A.G 1331 torque wrench (5 to 50 Nm)
- V.A.G 1526 multimeter or V.A.G 1715 multimeter
- V.A.G 1594 connector test kit
- Wiring diagram

Requirements







- The respective fuses of Diesel-Direct fuel injection system must be OK:
- For vehicles with automatic transmission, selector lever must be in position -P- or -N-.
- Parking brake must be engaged.
- Engine must be cold.
- Ignition is switched off.

Work Procedure

NOTE:
- When removing and installing, do not cant ceramic sheathed element glow plugs. Remove components which hinder installation.
- Characteristics and composition of ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.

- Disconnect connector from ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.
- Remove ceramic sheathed element glow plugs using flex wrench (3220).

Installation is reverse of removal, note the following:
- Before installing, cylinder head bores must be completely freed of deposits.

NOTE: Never oil or grease thread in cylinder head and ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.

- Screw ceramic sheathed element glow plugs into cylinder head by hand using flex wrench (3220).
- Then tighten ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.
Tightening torque: 15 Nm

WARNING: After installing and before first engine start with a cold engine, perform a resistance test at all ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.

- Specified value: max. 1 Ohms


If specified value is exceeded:
- Replace malfunctioning ceramic sheathed element glow plugs.

NOTE: If the malfunctioning ceramic sheathed element glow plug is broken, remove all broken pieces from engine, otherwise they can cause damage to engine.
