Axle shaft (flange shaft) oil seals, replacing
(Transmission in vehicle)

Special tools and equipment





^ VW 681 Oil seal extractor
^ 2062 Drift
^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench
^ VAG 1332 Torque wrench

Removing





- Remove covers, if part of original equipment, from wheel housing (arrows).
- Remove sound insulation below transmission if part of original equipment.

Left side oil seal
- Remove front exhaust system with catalyst on vehicles with 6 CYL Diesel engine.





Continued for both oil seals
- Remove protective plates for left and right side axle shafts (arrows). Third bolt cannot be seen in illustration.
- Disconnect left and right side axle shafts -1- from flanges and tie-up.

Vehicles with 8-cyl. injection engine
- Remove axle shaft.

Continuation for all vehicles
- Place drip tray underneath.
- Remove flange shaft securing bolts by threading two bolts into flange and counter-holding flange shaft using a lever.
- Remove flange shaft.





- Pull out flange shaft oil seal using VW 681.

Installing
- Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal.
- Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.





- Drive new right side flange shaft oil seal in 5.5 mm below housing outer surface; for left side flange shaft 5.5 mm below cover outer surface (see Note below).

Note:
^ If previously used flange shaft is re-used, repair pressing depth is 6.5 mm
^ Figure illustrates driving-in on right side of transmission.
^ Same procedure for left and right sides.
^ Do not tilt oil seal when driving it in.

- Insert flange shaft.
- Secure flange shaft with countersunk bolt (torque setting.





- Install axle shafts -1- to flange shafts.
- Install protective plates for left and right side axle shafts (arrows). Third bolt cannot be seen in illustration.
- Install covers in wheelhousing.
- Check transmission gear oil level.
- Install sound insulation, if part of original equipment.
