Note: All the illustrations show the left side of the final drive. Removal and installation of the flange shaft and seal on the right side is identical.
Removing
- Remove cover plate on final drive (arrows).
- Unbolt left and right axle shafts and tie them up.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 or equivalent underneath.
- Remove flange shaft securing bolt by screwing two bolts into flange and counter-holding flange shaft using a lever.
- Pull out flange shaft.
- Pry seal out with appropriate assembly lever.
Installing
Install in reverse order but note following:
- Apply gear oil to circumference of seal.
- Half fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease G 052 128 A1.
- Drive new seal in onto stop taking care not to tilt seal.
- Insert flanged shaft.
- Screw in flange shaft bolt and prevent flange from turning with a lever.
Tightening torques
Axle shaft to flange shaft:
Cover plate to rear final drive:
- Check rear final drive oil.
