NOTE: During removal and installation procedures, refer to the component location illustration above and component notes below.
COMPONENT NOTES
Main Bearing Cap (1)
- Bearing cap 1, at vibration damper end.
- Bearing cap 5 with recesses for thrust washers.
- Bearing shell retaining lugs on cylinder block bearing cap must be on the same side.
Main Bearing Cap Bolts (2)
- Tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) + 1/2 turn (180°).
- Two 90° additional turns is permitted.
- Always replace.
Bearing Shells (3)
- For bearing cap use shells without oil groove.
- For cylinder block use shells with oil groove.
- Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark at disassembly).
Thrust Washer For Cap (4)
- For bearing cap No. 5.
- Note orientation.
Crankshaft (5)
- Axial clearance:
- New: 0.07-0.23 mm (0.0027-0.0090 inch).
- Wear limit: 0.30 mm (0.0118).
- Check radial clearance with Plastigage:
- New: 0.02-0.06 mm (0.0008-0.0023 inch).
- Wear limit: 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch).
- Do not rotate the crankshaft when checking the radial clearance.
- Crankshaft dimensions:
- Main bearing: 59.958-59.978 mm (2.3623-2.3631 inch).
- Connecting rod bearing: 53.958-53.978 mm (2.1259-2.1267 inch).
- Reworking of crankshaft is not permitted.
Trigger Wheel (6)
- For Engine Speed sensor.
- Always replace when removed from crankshaft.
Trigger Wheel Bolts (7)
- Tighten to: 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.) + 1/4 turn 90°).
- Always replace when removed.
Thrust Washer For Block (8)
- For No. 5 bearing in block.
- Note orientation.
Oil Spray Jet (9)
- For crankshaft bearings 2-7.
- For piston cooling.
- Opening pressure: 2.0 bar (29 psi).
- Removing and installing, refer to Engine Lubrication.
