Test sequence


NOTE: EGR functional check is performed in Function 04 (basic adjustment), Using this process the EGR valve is metered every 70 seconds, so that in measured value block 003 the extreme values for the EGR (via Mass Air Flow sensor) can be read in display field 3


- Connect VAG 1551/1552 Scan Tool. Testing and Inspection
- Start engine and let idle
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01: "Engine electronics"

820/min early 7.9°v.OT 47%


- Specified value in display field 3:70 to 9.0° before TDC
- After 10 seconds the spray adjuster is in the late position.

- Specified value in display field 3:3.0 to 5.0 °C v.OT

If specifications not obtained:
- Check Cold start valve as follows:
- Press->button.
- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06: "End transfer"
- Press Q button to enter input
- Switch OFF ignition.
- Disconnect 10-pin harness connector. Refer to "Diesel Injection Pump, Servicing". Service and Repair
- Measure resistance between connector terminals 9 + 10.
- Specification: 12 to 20 Ohms







If specification not obtained
- Replace Cold start valve N108. Refer to "Diesel Injection Pump, Servicing". Service and Repair

If specification obtained
- Connect VAG 1598/22 Test Box to ECM wiring harness.







- Check wiring for open circuit between Test Box and 10-pin harness connector using Wiring diagram.
- Terminal 9 + socket 79
- Terminal 10 + socket 2 + 28
- Wire resistance: 1.5 Ohms maximum







- Check wires for short to one another, to vehicle Ground and to battery Plus.
- Specification: Infinity Ohms

If wiring OK
- Replace Diesel direct injection system ECM J248.

- Display Readiness code. Testing and Inspection

If DTC memory has been erased
- Create Readiness code. Testing and Inspection
