DTC 00542 Input Open

DTC Code 00542, Needle Lift Sensor G80:
Input Open

NOTE: The Needle Lift sensor signal is used to determine cold start injection. In cases of malfunction, cold start injection is regulated (revolution and load dependent), during normal operation cold start injection is controlled (revolution, lead and temperature dependent).

Special Tools, Testers And Auxiliary Items:
- VAG 1598/18 Test Box adaptor
- Fluke 83 Multimeter or equivalent
- VW 1594 Adaptor kit
- Wiring diagram

Testing Procedure:
Display will appear as shown:

Rapid data transfer HELP
Select function XX

- Press 0 and 6 buttons to select Function 06 "End data transfer"
- Press 0 button top enter input
- Switch OFF ignition





- Disconnect Needle Lift sensor G80 harness connector -1-
- Measure resistance between connector terminals:
Specification: 80 to 120 ohm

If specified resistance not obtained:
- Replace cyl. 3 injector with Needle Lift sensor G80





If specified resistance obtained:
- Connect VAG 1598/18 Test Box adaptor to ECM wiring harness





- Check wiring for open circuit between VAG 1598/18 Test Box adaptor and harness connector using wiring diagram:
Terminal 1 + socket 12
Terminal 2 + socket 11
Wire resistance: 1.5 ohm maximum

- Check for shorting between wires:
Specification: infinite ohm

If no malfunction detected:
- Replace ECM J248
