SUBJECT:
Central Locking System - Slow or No Operation of One or More Door Locks

MODEL(s):

Golf III /Jetta III / 1995 M.Y. (As of VIN SM013734)

CONDITION

One or both of the right side door lock buttons may operate substantially slower than the buttons on the left side when locking or unlocking from the driver's door with the key. If this should occur and there are no apparent vacuum leaks, perform the following modification to the vacuum supply system.

NOTE
When checking for this condition, allow a few seconds after locking the doors before trying to unlock them. If the key is cycled to the unlock position too quickly, the driver's door will immediately relock itself. Also remember that the key must be cycled twice to unlock all doors with selective locking.

SERVICE

Pull back the trunk carpeting to expose the central locking vacuum lines which are routed rearward along each side of the trunk and up the tail panel. You will be making a cut on each line at the approximate location indicated by the arrows.

Select one side and cut a 10 mm section out of the vacuum line (arrow 1) just below the level of the adjacent routing clip (arrow 2).

Install a vacuum-T, part number 447 711 758, across the cutout section (arrow 1). Then connect a 1050 mm (41") piece of vacuum line, part number 867 955 961 A, to the T-piece and route it across the tail panel to the other side of the trunk using the existing routing clips (arrow 2). DO NOT over-insert the line so it bottoms in the T-piece, creating an obstruction.

Cut a 10 mm section out of the existing vacuum line in the same location on the other side of the trunk and install another T-piece. Then trim the length of the newly installed vacuum line and insert it into the T-piece, connecting the right and left side vacuum circuits together. The length should be cut about 10 mm short as shown (arrow) to ensure the line does not bottom out in the T-piece.

The completed installation will look like this (arrows).
