Subject:
Correcting Trunk Lock Deficiencies
Model(s): Jetta III from m.y. 1993
This bulletin Supersedes Technical Bulletin, Group 551 93-02 issued July 30, 1993
Condition
^ Trunk will not open using push-button lock.
^ Trunk can be opened even if locked with key mechanically or via Central Locking System.
^ Trunk will not open using remote push-button in glove box.
Service
If the trunk does not open using the push-button lock in the trunk lid, do the following:
Check central locking activator operation
- Remove trim panel from inside rear lid
- Observe central locking activator while operating driver's door lock with key.
^ The activator must move the locking arm on the push-button lock assembly fully into lock and unlock positions.
If not,
- Refer to the Golf/Jetta Wiring Diagrams binder for troubleshooting the electrical operation of the central locking system.
- Refer to Technical Bulletin, Group 57, Number 94-03 for troubleshooting pneumatic operation of the central locking system.
If yes, Do the following:
Install auxiliary tension spring on trunk lock activator.
- Loosen the two Phillips head screws holding the activator to the trunk lid.
- Unclip the actuator rod from the locking arm on the push button lock assembly.
- Disconnect the vacuum hose to the activator
- Install auxiliary spring P/N 1HM 862 999 onto the activator as shown using an additional self-tapping screw and fiat washer. Be careful when tightening self-tapping screw not to clamp the spring between the washer and the activator. The spring must rotate freely when the screw is tight.
- Reinstall the activator.
Check adjustment of actuating rod from push-button lock to trunk latch:
- Unclip plastic coupler and pull threaded actuating rod free from coupler
- Close trunk latch manually to simulate that the trunk is closed and latched
- Grasp coupler arm and pull inward so the pivot foot is pulled tightly against its stop (dimension "A is at minimum).
- With other hand, place threaded actuating rod into plastic coupler and pull actuating rod toward the push-button lock assembly an additional 3 to 5 mm (5 to 10 threads) before closing the coupler.
Note:
If the adjustment is too tight, the lid will not latch when closed. Too loose, and the lid may be opened even though it is locked.
- Ensure that there is no interference between the linkage and adjacent wiring harnesses which may hamper movement.
Check remote trunk release operation:
- Remove trim panel from inside rear lid
- Manually close the trunk latch to simulate the trunk lid is closed and latched.
- Have second person operate remote trunk release switch. Observe operation of trunk release actuator.
If the pushrod does not move
- Troubleshoot the actuator and related wiring.
If the actuator push rod does move, but does not operate when the trunk is closed, proceed as follows:
If the trunk latch releases normally with the lid open but will not release when the trunk is closed, the trunk lid adjustment is most likely creating too much tension on the latch for the actuator to overcome.
To correct this condition;
- Screw in the rubber bumpers on the trunk lid. The rubber bumpers should provide just enough body contact to prevent rattles.
- Check for proper trunk lid fit with the rear fenders and adjust rubber bumpers as needed.
- Recheck remote trunk release trunk operation If problem still exists, continue:
- Adjust the striker pin upwards to reduce the tension on the latch.
- Adjust rubber bumpers as needed.
- Recheck remote trunk release trunk operation
Check latch adjusting rod
If the trunk lid tension was adjusted too tight, check the following:
- Check the actuation rod to make sure that it was not bent
- Check the actuator rod where it passes through the remote actuator pushrod. It should be in square contact when pushing against the actuating rod.
