Service Action Campaign SW 1992/93 Volkswagen Passat and 1993 EuroVan Vehicles Replace Power Window Regulator

Dear Volkswagen Retailer:





This is to inform you of the indication of a service action campaign involving 1992/93 model Passat and 1993 model EuroVan vehicles equipped with electric window regulators. The vehicles affected are within the vehicle identification number range. (see illustration)

Problem Description
We have found that a plastic component holding the regulator drive cable to the window could break. If that happens, the window regulator becomes inoperative and the window drops to the open position.

This problem affects the rear windows of Passat and the front windows of Eurovan vehicles.

Remedial Action
Replace both rear regulators on Passat and both front regulators on EuroVan vehicles.

Customer Notification
Volkswagen will mail notification letters to all known owners beginning on or about December 28, 1993. A sample of the Passat and EuroVan owner modification letters are enclosed for your information.

Please note
sufficient replacement parts are not immediately available; therefore, notification of owners will occur in stages.

Inventory Vehicles
Inventory vehicles are to be corrected according to Volkswagen's instructions. It is important that you do not retail a vehicle without first replacing the window regulators, if required.

Factory Completed Vehicles
A number of vehicles, both Passat and EuroVan, allocated to you have already been corrected prior to leaving the port facility. These vehicles show no open SW campaign code and are not to be repaired. It is important that you check each vehicle for the SW code being open in your V-Crest System prior to commencing repair work.

Vehicle Allocation Information
We will furnish computer printed listings of vehicles which are within your primary area of influence and are affected by this campaign. The listings are separated and will be furnished to you prior to each of the individual customer notification mailings. Each listing contains vehicle/owner information for a group of specific vehicles identified as follows:

1993 model Passat and EuroVan vehicle identification numbers of vehicles in retailer inventory equipped with velour interior

1993 model Passat vehicles with leather interior and affected by the J.D. Power CSI Survey

1992 model Passat vehicles

1993 model Passat and EuroVan vehicles with velour interior not affected by the J.D. Power CSI Survey

Customer Satisfaction Program
Volkswagen United States, Inc. is determined to make this repair as convenient and satisfying as possible for customers. We request that you offer the following to each owner at the time of scheduling a service appointment:

a tree pick-up and return of the owner's vehicle
or
a free loaner vehicle for one day

We also request that you return each vehicle vacuumed and washed. Volkswagen will reimburse you for the cost of these services.

Several Retail Service Managers suggested that retailers share in this Customer Satisfaction Program by offering the owner a maintenance Service Coupon (oil/filter change). This Service Coupon would be applied toward the next maintenance service. A supply of coupons will be mailed to you for your use together with the initial vehicle allocation listing.

Work Procedure
Included are detailed window regulator instructions. It is important to follow these procedures carefully. Additionally, we are providing a video describing the most important steps of the procedure. It is important that each vehicle be quality checked after completing the repairs. A "Quality Check Statement" is included in the Work Procedure.
