Ignition Power Stage: Testing and Inspection
IGNITION COIL POWER OUTPUT STAGE, CHECKING
Requirement
- ignition coil OK
- remove fuse 18
- fuel pumps must not run during cranking because catalytic converter could be damaged
- switch OFF ignition
- disconnect harness connector from power output stage (N 70) of ignition coil
- switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt range
- connect multimeter between terminals 1 and 3 of connector using jumper leads from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- switch ON ignition
- must be approx. battery voltage
If NO
- check for open circuit in wiring using wiring diagram, repair or replace as necessary
If battery Voltage obtained
- connect US 1115 LED tester between terminals 2 and 3 of connector using jumper leads from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- operate starter and check for signal from Hall sender
- LED must flicker
If NO
- check Hall sender
If LED flickers
- switch OFF ignition
- connect power output stage harness connector
- disconnect Hall sender (G 40) harness connector at ignition distributor
- switch Fluke 83 multimeter to 20 Volt range
- connect multimeter between terminals 1 and 15 of ignition coil using jumper leads from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- switch ON ignition
- touch center wire from disconnected Hall sender connector briefly to ground using jumper lead from VW 1594 adaptor kit
- the voltage value must increase to 2 volts minimum and then return to 0 Volts
If voltage does not drop
- trial replace power output stage of ignition coil
- and/or trial replace CIS-E Motronic control unit (J 204)
- inspect ignition coil to see if sealing compound is leaking out, replace if necessary
