Description and Operation From Jan. 1993

PURPOSE
The Camshaft Position Sensor signal is used (in conjunction with the engine reference signal) to identify # 1 cylinder for sequential injection and knock control.

LOCATION
A hall sensor is located in the cylinder head next to the cam drive sprocket for cylinders # 1,# 3, and # 5.
A shutter wheel is mounted to the cam drive sprocket for cylinders # 1,# 3, and # 5

OPERATION
A voltage signal is generated when the shutter wheel opening passes the hall sensor. Since the shutter turns at camshaft speed, one signal is generated for every two crankshaft revolutions.

A fault code is stored if the Camshaft Position Sensor malfunctions. The vehicle will start, but run in "safe" mode (no sequential injection, retarded timing).
