Do not drive vehicle with VAG 1551 diagnostic tester connected.
1. Ensure fuses S16, S53 and S54 are in satisfactory condition, turn ignition switch to Off position, then remove shift lever knob and boot.
2. Connect diagnostic cable VAG 1551/1 or equivalent for VAG 1551 tester or equivalent as follows:
a. Black plug (voltage supply) on black terminal ``A'' in vehicle, Fig. 3.
b. White plug on gray terminal ``B.'' If wire in terminal ``B'' is in position ``2,'' reposition to position ``1.''
c. Blue plug not used.
3. Display on VAG 1551 will alternate between ``VAG self-diagnosis HELP 1 - Rapid data transfer'' and ``VAG self-diagnosis HELP 2 - Blink code output.''
4. For additional operating instructions push HELP key, if no display appears, check voltage supply to tester, pressing ``arrow'' key steps through program.
