CAUTION
Before working on the electrical system, disconnect battery ground strap.
Central locking system - components
The central locking system is operated pneumatically. The system uses a bi-pressure pump which supplies either pressure or vacuum to the left rear door, right side front and rear doors, rear lid and gas tank flap activators.
Bi-pressure pump, removing
Work sequence
- disconnect battery ground strap
- open rear lid
- remove left side trim panel in luggage compartment
- unhook retaining strap
- remove bi-pressure pump from housing
- pull off hose
- pull off electrical connector
- remove bi-pressure pump
Bi-pressure pump, installing
Work sequence
- reinstall all components in reverse order
- reconnect battery ground strap
- turn key in drivers door to check central locking system for proper function
Master activator, removing
The drivers door lock activator contains the master switch which operates the bi-pressure pump.
Work sequence
- disconnect battery ground strap
- open door
- remove drivers door trim panel
- partially pull off plastic moisture barrier
- remove master activator mounting screws (arrows)
- pull off electrical connector
- unhook connecting rod
- remove master activator

Work sequence
Note
Check plastic moisture barrier for damage, replace if necessary
- reinstall all components in reverse order
- reconnect battery ground strap
- turn key in drivers door to check central locking system for proper function
Troubleshooting - electrical
Note
Refer to Wiring Diagrams Manual, Golf, GTI, Jetta 1985-1986, Service Publications No. W42 001 136 1, and Wiring Diagram Product Circular 86-56 of Sept 22, 1986 for current flow diagrams.

^ bi-pressure system OK
^ fuse S3 OK
Troubleshooting - bi-pressure system
Test conditions
^ electrical system OK
Note
If central locking system has not been activated for an extended period, key must be turned in lock several times to activate system.
When properly functioning, all locks must close within two seconds.
