Ignition Timing: Adjustments

1. With the engine cold, and all electrical loads switched OFF, connect test harness (VW 1315 A/2 or equivalent) between the idle control valve and its harness plug.
2. Connect a digital multimeter to the test harness, and set it to the 2A scale.
3. Switch the ignition ON (engine not running). Meter should show 945 - 1055 mA.
4. If the current value is not within specifications, replace the control unit.
5. With the engine at normal operating temp. (80°C/176°F) and running, idle control current value should be 430 +/- 20 mA.
6. If current value is not within specification, adjust by turning throttle bypass screw at the throttle housing.
7. Idle speed should be 800 +/- 70 rpm.
