Valve Play, Checking and Adjusting

Check and adjust valve play when engine is warm (coolant temperature above 35°C, cylinder head warm to touch)

Adjust valve play, using adjusting disc (thickness: 3.00-4.25)

Desired values, warm:
Intake valve 0.20-0.30 mm
Exhaust valve 0.40-0.50 mm

After preforming repairs on the cylinder head, adjust the valve play with a cold engine

Desired values, cold:
Intake valve 0.15-0.25 mm
Exhaust valve 0.35-0.45 mm

NOTE:
- After cylinder head repairs, valve play must be checked and if necessary adjusted after approx. 1000 miles
- Thickness of valve adjusting disc is etched on underside. When installing be sure that markings face downward towards cam follower. Discs can be reused if not worn or damaged.

Sequence

- adjust crankshaft and camshaft so that the cam lobes of the cylinder being adjusted point upwards

Valve play, adjusting

NOTE: When adjusting valves, pistons must not be at TDC. Turn crankshaft about 1/4 turn past TDC so that valves do not contact pistons when cam followers are pressed down.

- press cam follower downwards with tool 2078
- remove adjusting disc with tool 10-208
- install required adjusting disc (numbering must point downwards)
