2GR-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0016, P0018: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)

DESCRIPTION

In the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system, the appropriate intake valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs intake valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the intake camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for intake camshaft), and operating the camshaft timing gear assembly; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

- To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learning value while the engine is idling. The VVT learning value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The intake valve timing is set to the most retarded angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learning value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC P0016 (Bank 1) or P0018 (Bank 2).

MONITOR STRATEGY

TYPICAL ENABLING CONDITIONS

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].

7. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C].

8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

9. Read the pending DTCs [D].

HINT
* If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

11. Input the DTC: P0016 or P0018.

12. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
* If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
* If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
* If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [E] through [G].

13. Drive the vehicle for 2 to 3 minutes [E].

CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

14. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [F].

15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [G].

16. Read the pending DTCs.

HINT
* If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

17. Check the DTC judgment result.

18. If the judgment result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
* If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
* If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

WIRING DIAGRAM

Refer to DTC P0010 P0010.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
* Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.
* Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
* Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE

1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCs OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016 OR P0018)

(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

(d) Read the DTCs.

Result:

HINT
If any DTCs other than P0016 or P0018 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

B -- GO TO DTC CHART SFI System
A -- Continue to next step.

2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR BANK 1 OR BANK 2)

(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2).

(d) Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.

OK:

HINT
Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1, VVT Change Angle #1, VVT OCV Duty #2 and VVT Change Angle #2] Data List / Active List.

NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0016 OR P0018)

(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Clear the DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

(d) Start the engine.

(e) Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

(f) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.

(g) Read the pending DTCs using the Techstream.

OK:

No pending DTC output.

HINT
DTC P0016 or P0018 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay output even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

NG -- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)

OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems

4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)

(a) Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH.

(b) Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft.

(c) Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position.

(d) Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align.

(e) Turn the crankshaft clockwise by 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again.

OK:

The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position.

(f) Reinstall the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH.

NG -- ADJUST VALVE TIMING Reassembly
OK -- Continue to next step.

5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT)
