Component Tightening Specifications and Sequences

Cylinder Head Bolt





HINT: The cylinder head bolts are tightened in 2 progressive steps.

Apply a light coat of engine oil to the bolt threads and the area beneath the bolt heads that come in contact with the washers.
Install the bolts and plate washers to the cylinder head.

NOTICE: Do not drop the washers into the cylinder head.





Using several steps, uniformly install and tighten the 10 cylinder head set bolts and plate washers with a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench in the order shown in the illustration.
Torque 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.)





Mark the front side of the cylinder head bolt with paint.
Retighten the cylinder head bolts 90° in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Check that the paint mark is now at a 90° angle to the front.





Cylinder Head Set Bolt
Using vernier calipers, measure the length of the head bolts from the seat to the end.
Standard bolt length 141.3 to 142.7 mm (5.563 to 5.618 inch)
Maximum bolt length 144.2 mm (5.677 inch)
If the bolt length is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head set bolt.

Intake Manifold





Install the intake manifold with the 5 bolts and 2 nuts.
Torque 30 Nm (305 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)

Camshaft Bearing Cap





Examine the front marks and numbers, and check that the order is as shown in the illustration. Then install the bearing caps into the cylinder head.





Using several steps, uniformly tighten the 10 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque:
No. 1 Bearing cap 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
No. 3 Bearing cap 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.)

NO. 2 CAMSHAFT





Examine the front marks and numbers, and check that the order is as shown in the illustration. Then install the bearing caps onto the cylinder head.





Using several steps, uniformly tighten the 10 bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque:
No. 2 Bearing cap 30 Nm (301 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.)
No. 3 Bearing cap 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.)

Main Bearing Cap





Step 1
Install and uniformly tighten the 10 main bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.)





Retighten the 10 main bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.)





Step 2
Mark the front of the bearing cap bolts with paint.
Retighten the bearing cap bolts by 90° in the numerical order shown in the illustration.
Check that the paint mark is now at a 90° angle to the front.

Rod Bearing Cap





Step 1
Install and alternately tighten the bolts of the connecting rod cap in several steps.
Torque 25 Nm (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft. lbs.)





Step 2
Mark the front of the connecting rod cap bolts with paint.
Retighten the cap bolts by 90° as shown in the illustration.

Crankshaft Pulley
Torque 180 Nm (1,835 kgf-cm, 133 ft. lbs.)

Flex Plate
Torque 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.)

Flywheel
Torque 130 Nm (1,330 kgf-cm, 96 ft. lbs.)

Oil Pump
Torque 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)

Exhaust Manifold
EXHAUST MANIFOLD CONVERTER SUB-ASSEMBLY
Except for PZEV:
Temporarily tighten the exhaust manifold converter with the 5 nuts.





Tighten the 5 nuts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 37 Nm (378 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)

For PZEV:
Temporarily tighten the exhaust manifold converter with the 5 nuts.





Tighten the 5 nuts in the sequence shown in the illustration.
Torque 37 Nm (378 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)
Front exhaust pipe assembly x Exhaust manifold RH 62 Nm (632 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.)
Front exhaust pipe assembly x Exhaust manifold LH 62 Nm (632 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.)

Water Pump
Water pump x Cylinder block 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.)
Water pump pulley x Water pump 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.)
