Shifter A/T: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT CONSOLE BOX
a. Remove the front door scuff plate LH.
b. Remove the cowl side trim LH.
c. Remove the front door scuff plate RH.
d. Remove the cowl side trim RH.
e. Remove the No. 1 lower panel.
f. Remove the No. 2 under cover.
g. Remove the No. 2 lower panel.
h. Remove the upper console panel.
i. Remove the center cluster finish panel.
j. Remove the heater control assembly.
k. Remove the rear console box.
l. Remove the front console box.
2. DISCONNECT 2 CONNECTORS
3. REMOVE 4 CLAMPS
4. DISCONNECT SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
a. Using pliers, remove the clamp.
b. Disconnect the shift control cable from the shift lever assembly.
5. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY
Remove the 4 bolts and the shift lever assembly.
DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE O/D MAIN SWITCH TERMINAL
a. Remove the connector from the shift lever plate.
b. Disengage the secondary locking device.
c. Release the locking lug of the terminals 2 and 4, and pull the terminals out from the rear.
2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the 2 screws and shift lever knob sub-assembly.
NOTICE: Pay attention not to apply unnatural load onto O/D main switch wire harness.
3. DISASSEMBLE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Remove the shift lever knob cover.
b. Remove the shift lever knob button and spring.
c. Remove the screw and O/D main switch.
4. REMOVE INDICATOR HOUSING
Remove a screw and position indicator housing.
5. DISCONNECT INDICATOR LIGHT
a. Remove the indicator light from indicator housing.
b. Remove the bulb from indicator light wire.
6. DISASSEMBLE INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Remove the position indicator lower housing, position indicator slide cover and shift lock release button cap from the position indicator upper housing.
b. Remove the shift lock release link.
c. Remove the shift lock release button, and spring from the position indicator lower housing.
7. REMOVE SHIFT LOCK UNIT
a. Disconnect the shift lock solenoid bracket connector.
b. Remove the 2 screws and shift lock solenoid bracket.
c. Remove the shift lock control ECU.
8. REMOVE SPRING PLATE
Remove a screw and spring plate from the shift lever sub-assembly.
9. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Using 2 screws, press down the claw and remove the control shaft from the shift lever plate.
b. Remove the shift lever sub-assembly.
10. DISASSEMBLE SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Measure the distance A between the lower edge of the shift lever knob sleeve and the upper edge of the floor shift lever.
b. Remove the shift lever knob sleeve from the detent rod.
c. Using a hammer, remove the grooved pin.
NOTICE: When pressing down the grooved pin, if doing it at the place other than the notch, there may be fear of damaging the shift lever subassembly.
d. Remove the detent rod and compression rod spring.
11. REMOVE COLLARS
Using a screwdriver and a hammer, remove the 4 collars.
REASSEMBLY
1. INSTALL COLLARS
2. ASSEMBLE SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Apply MP grease on the detent rod and shift lever sub-assembly.
b. Install the detent rod and compression rod spring to shift lever sub-assembly.
c. Place the shift lever sub-assembly on as shown in the illustration.
d. Insert the grooved pin to the detent rod pin hole.
NOTICE:
^ Assemble the grooved pin to ensure that it fits into the guide hole of the shift lever subassembly in parallel.
^ Take care not to insert the pin in the wrong direction of the detent rod.
e. Meet the grooved pin with the notch of the guide hole.
f. Press the pin with a hammer.
A: 10.0 - 10.4 mm (0.39 - 0.41 inch)
NOTICE: When pressing in the grooved pin, if doing it at the place other than the notch, the shift lever sub-assembly might be damaged.
3. CHECK DETENT ROD OPERATION
4. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SLEEVE TO DETENT ROD
Drive the shift lever knob sleeve to the distance A measured before removal.
5. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Apply the MP grease.
b. Install the control shaft and the shift lever sub-assembly to the shift lever plate.
NOTICE: Take care not to install them in the wrong direction of the shift lever sub-assembly.
6. INSTALL SPRING PLATE
7. INSTALL SHIFT LOCK UNIT
a. Install the shift lock solenoid bracket and 2 screws.
b. Install the shift lock control ECU.
NOTICE: Install the grooved pin into the grooved of the shift lock unit as shown in the illustration.
8. ASSEMBLE INDICATOR HOUSING
a. Install the shift lock release button, link and spring to the position indicator lower housing.
b. Install the position indicator slide cover to the position indicator upper housing.
c. Install the position indicator lower housing to the position indicator upper housing.
d. Install the shift lock release button cap to the indicator housing.
9. INSTALL INDICATOR HOUSING
Install the indicator housing with a screw.
10. INSTALL INDICATOR LIGHT
a. Install the bulb to the indicator light wire.
b. Install the indicator light to the indicator housing.
11. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install a screw and O/D main switch to shift lever knob.
b. Install the shift lever knob cover to shift lever knob.
c. Apply MP grease to shift lever knob button.
d. Install the spring and shift lever knob button to shift lever knob.
e. Coat the threads of the 2 screws with sealant.
Sealant: Part No. 08833-00080, THREE BOND 1344, LOCTITE 242 or equivalent
f. Install the shift lever knob and 2 screws to shift lever subassembly.
NOTICE: Make sure not to catch O/D main switch wire harness.
12. INSTALL O/D MAIN SWITCH TERMINAL
a. Connect the 2 O/D main switch terminals to the connector.
b. Connect the connector to the shift lever plate.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY
Install the shift lever assembly with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
2. CONNECT SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
a. Connect the shift control cable to the shift lever assembly.
b. Install the clip.
3. INSTALL 4 CLAMPS
4. CONNECT 2 CONNECTORS
5. INSTALL FRONT CONSOLE BOX
a. Install the front console box.
b. Install the rear console box.
c. Install the heater control assembly.
d. Install the center cluster finish panel.
e. Install the upper console panel.
f. Install the No. 1 lower panel.
g. Install the No. 2 under cover.
h. Install the No. 2 lower panel.
i. Install the cowl side trim RH.
j. Install the front door scuff plate RH.
k. Install the cowl side trim LH.
l. Install the front door scuff plate LH.
6. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER OPERATION
a. When shifting it to each position, make sure that the shifting lever moves smoothly, can be moderately operated and the position indicator displays correctly.
Positions, which can be operated without pressing the shift lever knob button R -> N -> D, L -> 2 -> D -> N
Positions, which can be operated only by pressing the shift lever knob button D -> 2 -> L, N -> R -> P
Positions, which can be operated only by pressing the shift lever knob button, ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed P -> R
b. When starting the engine, make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from N to D position, and moves rearward when shifting to R position.
