M.I.L. "ON" P1436 - HCAC BYPASS VALVE IMPROVEMENT

Models:
'01 - '02 Prius

Introduction

Certain 2001 and 2002 model year Prius vehicles that are operated in areas where road salt is commonly used may experience a M.I.L. "ON" condition with Diagnostic Trouble Code P1436 stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM). Use the following procedure to inspect the HCAC bypass valve for smooth operation and replace the Front Exhaust Pipe Assembly if any shaft binding is evident.

^ 2001 - 2002 model year Prius vehicles produced BEFORE the VIN shown below.

Repair Procedure

Refer to the Engine Diagnostic section in the applicable Prius Repair Manual, Volume 1.

^ Follow the Fault Isolation Procedure (FIP) for DTC P1436.

^ When checking the bypass valve operation per the FIP, pay particular attention at step 3 or step 5 for a sticking or binding condition when activating the actuator or rotating the valve by hand.

^ If any valve binding is noted, replace the Front Exhaust Pipe Sub-Assembly with the specified new part.

^ Refer to the EM section of the applicable Prius Repair Manual, Volume 2 for the Exhaust System Component view.

Applicable Warranty*:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
