Automatic Transaxle Replacement
REMOVAL
HINT: Before removing the engine and transaxle, refer to Engine; Service and Repair for related service procedures.
1. DISCONNECT SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
a. Remove the nut from the control shaft lever.
Torque: 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.)
b. Remove the clip, and disconnect the control cable from the bracket.
c. Disconnect the control cable from the cable clamp on the transaxle.
2. DISCONNECT 2 OIL COOLER HOSES FROM TRANSAXLE
3. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH MOUNTING BOLT
a. Remove the hole plug.
b. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt, and remove the bolt with a wrench, while holding the crankshaft pulley.
Torque: 41 Nm (420 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
HINT: At the time of installation, first install the green colored bolt and then the 5 other bolts.
4. REMOVE 4 TRANSAXLE LOWER SIDE MOUNTING BOLTS
Torque: 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
5. REMOVE ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE w/ FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER ASSEMBLY
a. Attach an engine jack to the front suspension member.
b. Remove the 2 bolts, 4 nuts, 4 long bolts and 4 suspension member lower braces.
c. Lower the engine and transaxle with the suspension member.
Torque:
Bolt A: 181 Nm (1,850 kgf-cm, 134 ft. lbs.)
Bolt B: 32 Nm (330 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.)
Nut C: 36 Nm (370 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Be careful not to damage the engine wire, cables, hoses and pipes.
6. ATTACH ENGINE SLING DEVICE TO ENGINE HANGERS
a. Install the 2 engine hangers.
Part No.: Engine hanger: 12282-20020
Bolt: 91621-60822
Torque: 20 Nm (200 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)
b. Using a hoist or similar object, hook the engine hangers.
CAUTION:: Do not hook the chain to any other part when hanging the engine.
7. REMOVE PS VANE PUMP FROM ENGINE
a. Disconnect the PS switch connector.
b. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the PS vane pump from the engine.
Torque: 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.)
8. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT
9. SEPARATE ENGINE w/ TRANSAXLE AND SUSPENSION MEMBER
a. Remove the 2 member nuts and bolt.
b. Separate the engine w/ transaxle and suspension by a hoist or similar object.
Torque:
Nut A: 95 Nm (969 kgf-cm, 70 ft. lbs.)
Bolt B: 87 Nm (887 kgf-cm, 64 ft. lbs.)
Nut C: 95 Nm (969 kgf-cm, 70 ft. lbs.)
10. DISCONNECT ENGINE WIRE FROM T/A
a. Disconnect the wire harness clamps.
b. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.
c. Disconnect the solenoid wire connector.
d. Disconnect the counter gear speed sensor connector.
e. Disconnect the input turbine speed sensor connector.
f. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector.
11. REMOVE STARTER AND SEPARATE ENGINE AND TRANSAXLE
a. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.
Torque: 37 Nm (380 kgf-cm, 28 ft. lbs.)
b. Remove the bolt with the ground cable and the 4 other bolts, and separate the engine and transaxle.
Torque:
Bolt A: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
Bolt B: 46 Nm (469 kgf-cm, 34 ft. lbs.)
12. REMOVE TRANSAXLE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET
Remove the 3 bolts and engine mounting bracket.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
13. REMOVE SHIFT CONTROL CABLE BRACKET NO. 1 AND OIL COOLER TUBE
a. Remove the 2 bolts and shift control cable bracket No. 1.
Torque: 12 Nm (124 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.)
b. Remove the bolt and oil cooler tube clamp.
Torque: 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 ft. lbs.)
c. Using SST and spanner, disconnect the oil cooler tube.
SST 09023-01270
Torque: 34.3 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.)
INSTALLATION
1. CHECK TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH INSTALLATION
Using calipers and a straight edge, measure the distance between the installed surface and the front surface of the transaxle housing.
Correct distance: More than 12.95 mm (0.510 inch)
2. TRANSAXLE INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
HINT:
^ After installation, adjust the shift control cable and park/neutral position switch.
^ Add ATF and check the fluid level.
^ Perform a test drive for the vehicle.
