Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

INSPECTION
1. WARM UP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.





2. Using hand-held tester: CHECK IGNITION TIMING
a. Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
b. Select the CURRENT DATA, and read the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 8 - 12° BTDC @ idle
3. Not using hand-held tester: CHECK IGNITION TIMING





a. Using SST, short between the DLC3 terminals TC and CG.

HINT: After engine rpm is kept at 900 - 1,500 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.





b. Connect the timing light.
1) Open the engine wire protector (Marking: IG).
2) Pick up the service wire and connect the timing light.
Service wire color: Black-White





c. Read ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 8 - 12° BTDC @ idle
d. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
e. Further check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing: 5 - 15° BTDC @ idle

HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 5° and 15°.

f. Disconnect the timing light.
