Valve Clearance: Adjustments
NOTE: Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.1. Remove throttle body and intake air connector assembly, refer to Powertrain Management.
2. Disconnect high-tension cords from cylinder head covers.
3. Remove No.3, No.1 and No.2 cylinder head covers as follows;
(a) Remove the four bolts, four nuts and No.3 cylinder head cover.
(b) Remove the four bolts, No.1 cylinder head cover and gasket.
(c) Remove the four bolts, No.2 cylinder head cover and gasket.
4. Set number 1 cylinder to TDC./compression as follows:
(a) Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "O" of the No.1 timing belt cover.
NOTE: Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.
(b) Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing pulleys are aligned with the timing marks of the No.4 timing belt cover.
- If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°).
5. Inspect valve clearance as follows:
(a) Check only those valves indicated in the illustration.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.
- Record the valve clearance measurements of those that are out of specification. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting shim.
- Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake: 0.15-0.25 mm (0.006-0.010 inch).
Exhaust: 0.25-0.35mm(0.010-0.014 inch).
(b)Turn the crankshaft pulley 1 revolution (360°), and align the groove with timing mark "0" of the No.1 timing belt cover.
(c)Check only the valves indicated as shown.
- Measure the valve clearance as outlined above.
6. Remove the adjusting shim as follows
(a) Turn the camshaft so that the cam lobe for the valve to be adjusted faces up.
(b) Turn the valve lifter with a screwdriver so that the notches are perpendicular to the camshaft.
(c) Using valve lifter press Special Service Tool (SST) No. 09248-55040, or equivalent, (A in illustration), hold the camshaft as shown.
(d) Using SST valve lifter press (A in illustration), press down the valve lifter and place valve lifter stopper SST No. 09248-55040 (B in illustration) between the camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST (A).
NOTE: Apply SST valve lifter stopper (B in illustration) at slight angle on the side marked with 7, at the position shown in the illustration.
(e) Insert SST (B in illustration) gently from the inside as shown.
(f) Using a small screwdriver and a magnetic finger, remove the adjusting shim.
(g) Determine the replacement adjusting shim size according to the following Formula or Charts:
FORMULA METHOD:
- Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed shim.
- Calculate the thickness of a new shim so the valve clearance comes within specified value.
T Thickness of used shim
A Measured valve clearance
N Thickness of new shim
Intake: N = T + (A-0.20 mm (0.008 inch)).
Exhaust: N = T + (A-0.30 mm (0.012 inch)).
CHART METHOD:
Intake Valve Adjustment Shim Chart:
Exhaust Valve Adjustment Shim Chart:
- Refer to the illustrated charts to determine the correct shim.
(h) Select a new shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated values.
NOTE: Shims are available in 17 sizes in increments of 0.050 mm (0.0020 inch), from 2.500 mm (0.0984 inch) to 3.300 mm (0.1299 inch).
(i) Place a new adjusting shim on the valve lifter, with imprinted numbers facing down.
(j) Press down the valve lifter with SST valve lifter press (A), and remove SST valve lifter stopper (B).
(k) Recheck the valve clearance as described above.
7. Install No.1, No.2 and No.3 cylinder head covers as follows:
(a) Remove any old packing (FIPG) material.
(b) Apply seal packing part No. 08826-00080, or equivalent, to the cylinder head as shown in the illustration.
(c) Install the gaskets to the No.1 and No.2 cylinder head covers.
(d) Install the No.1 cylinder head cover with the four bolts and tighten to 8.3 Nm (85 kg. cm., 74 inch lbs.).
(e) Install the No.2 cylinder head cover with the four bolts and tighten 8.3 Nm (85 kg. cm., 74 inch lbs.).
(f) Install the No.3 cylinder head cover with the four bolts and four nuts and tighten to 8.3 Nm (85 kg. cm., 74 inch lbs.).
8. Connect high-tension cords to cylinder head covers.
9. Install throttle body and intake air connector assembly.
