1. Install engine and transmission assembly in vehicle as follows:






(a) Attach the engine hoist chain to the engine hangers.
(b) Lower the engine and transmission assembly into the engine compartment.

NOTE: Install the engine and transmission assembly carefully without damaging the shift lever retainer Manual Transmission (M/T), A/C compressor and PS solenoid valve.

(c) Insert the stud bolts of the front engine mounting insulators into the stud bolt holes of the front suspension crossmember.
(d) Temporarily install the two nuts holding the engine front mounting insulators to the front suspension crossmember.
(e) Keep the engine level with a jack.
(f) Remove the hoist chain..






(g) Install the support member to the engine rear mounting insulator with the four nuts hand tight.
(h) Install the four bolts holding the support member to the body, then tighten to: 25 Nm (260 kg. cm., 19 ft. lbs.).
(i) Tighten the four nuts holding the support member to the engine rear mounting insulator, then tighten to: 13 Nm (135 kg. cm., 10 ft. lbs.).




(j) Tighten the two nuts holding the engine front mounting insulators to the front suspension crossmember, then tighten to: 59 Nm (600 kg. cm., 43 ft. lbs.).
2. On models with M/T, Install transmission shift lever, then tighten to: 19 Nm (195 kg. cm., 14 ft. lbs.).
3. On all models, install propeller shaft, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
4. On models with Automatic Transmission (A/T), connect transmission control rod as follows:






(a) Shift the shift lever to N position.
(b) Fully turn the control shaft lever back and return two notches. It is now in neutral position.
(c) Connect the control rod to the shift lever with the nut, then tighten to: 13 Nm (130 kg. cm., 9 ft. lbs.).
5. On all models, install exhaust pipe heat insulator.
6. Install No.2 front exhaust pipe as follows:
(a) Install two new gaskets and the No.2 front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold with four new nuts, then tighten to: 62 Nm (630 kg. cm., 46 ft. lbs.).
(b) Install the pipe support bracket with the two bolts, then tighten to: 43 N m (440 kg. cm., 32 ft. lbs.).
(c) Install a new gasket and the No.2 front exhaust pipe to the front exhaust pipe with the two bolts and two new nuts, then tighten to: 58 Nm (590 kg. cm., 43 ft. lbs.).
7. On models with M/T, Install clutch release cylinder and ground strap as follows:
(a) Install the clutch release cylinder with the two bolts, then tighten to: 13 Nm (130 kg. cm., 9 ft. lbs.).
(b) Install the ground strap with the bolt, then tighten to: 37 Nm (380 kg. cm., 27 ft. lbs.).
8. Install upper console panel, shift lever boots and holding bolts.
9. On all models, connect engine wire to cabin as follows:
(a) Push in the engine wire through the cowl panel.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the engine wire.

(b) Connect the connector to the connector cassette.
(c) Connect the connector to the instrument panel wire connector.
(d) Connect the two connectors to the Engine Control Module (ECM).






(e) Insert the ECM bracket into the stay on the floor panel.
(f) Install the ECM with the nut.
(g) Install the ECM protector with the two nuts.
(h) Install the floor carpet.
(i) Install the scuff plate.
10. Connect engine wire to cowl panel.
11. Install A/C compressor as follows:
(a) Using a torx socket (E10), install the stud bolt and compressor, then tighten to: 26 Nm (265 kg. cm., 19 ft. lbs.).
(b) Connect the compressor connector.
(c) Temporarily install the compressor with the nut and two bolts.
(d) Alternately tighten the nut and two bolts to: 52 Nm (530 kg. cm., 38 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the Power Steering (PS) pressure feed hose with the two clamp bolts.
13. Install PS pump as follows:






(a) Install the pump bracket with the two bolts, then tighten as follows:
- Bolt A: 58 Nm (590 kg. cm., 43 ft. lbs.).
- Bolt B: 39 Nm (400 kg. cm.. 29 ft. lbs.).
(b) Install the pump rear stay with the two bolts, then tighten to: 39 Nm (400 kg. cm., 29 ft. lbs.).
(c) Install the vane pump to the pump bracket.
(d) Connect these hoses:
- PS air hose to No.4 timing belt cover.
- PS air hose to air intake chamber.
(e) Install the pump front bracket.
14. Install engine wire bracket.
15. Connect fuel hoses as follows:
(a) Connect the fuel return hose to the fuel return pipe.
(b) Install the fuel return hose to the clamp of the oil dipstick guide.
(c) Install the fuel inlet hose with two new gaskets and the union bolt, then tighten to: 29 Nm (300 kg. cm., 22 ft. lbs.).
16. Connect wires and connectors.
17. Connect EVAP hose.
18. Connect brake booster vacuum hose.
19. Connect heater hoses.
20. Install charcoal canister.
21. Install water pump pulley, fan, fluid coupling assembly and drive belt.
22. Install air cleaner, Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter and intake air connector pipe assembly.
23. Connect control cables to throttle body.
24. Fill with fuel.
25. Fill with engine oil.
26. Install radiator assembly, refer to Cooling System.
27. Start engine and check for leaks.
28. Install hood.
29. Road test, check for abnormal noise, shock slippage, correct shift points and smooth operation.
30. Check engine coolant and engine oil levels.
