Removal and Installation of Transaxle

Components:






TRANSAXLE REMOVAL




1. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CASE ASSEMBLY WITH AIR HOSE
2. REMOVE CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER AND LINE
a. Remove the set bolt of the clutch line bracket.

Torque: 12 N.m (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf)

b. Remove the 2 bolts and clutch release cylinder and line.

Torque: 12 N.m (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf)




3. DISCONNECT BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH AND VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR
4. REMOVE GROUND CABLE
Remove the bolt and ground cable from the transaxle.
5. DISCONNECT CONTROL CABLE
a. Remove the 2 clips and washers.
b. Remove the 2 clips from the cables.
c. Disconnect the 2 control cables from the control lever housing support bracket.




6. REMOVE SET BOLT OF STARTER
Remove the set bolt of the starter from the transaxle upper side.

Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft-lbf)

7. REMOVE 3 TRANSAXLE UPPER SIDE MOUNTING BOLTS

Torque: 64 N.m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)

8. REMOVE ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING STAY
Remove the 2 bolts and stay.

Torque: 21 N.m (210 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf)




9. REMOVE SET BOLT OF ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING INSULATOR FROM TRANSAXLE UPPER SIDE

Torque: 56 N.m (570 kgf-cm, 41 ft-lbf)




10. INSTALL ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE
11. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
12. RAISE VEHICLE

NOTE: Be sure the vehicle is securely supported.

13. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
14. DRAIN TRANSAXLE OIL

Oil grade: API GL-4 or GL-5
Viscosity: SAE 75W - 90
Capacity: 1.9 liters (2.0 US qts, 1.7 Imp. qts)

15. REMOVE LEFT AND RIGHT DRIVE SHAFTS
16. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
a. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
b. Remove the 2 nuts and gasket from the exhaust manifold.

Torque: 62 N.m (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft-lbf)

c. Remove the 2 bolts from the No.1 pipe support.

Torque: 19 N.m (195 kgf-cm, 14 ft-lbf)

d. Remove the 2 bolts, gasket and pipe.

Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft-lbf)

17. REMOVE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND LOWER SUSPENSION ARM
a. Support the suspension crossmember with a jack.




b. W/ Stabilizer bar:
Remove the 2 set bolts of the stabilizer bar bushing bracket.

Torque: 50 N.m (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft-lbf)




c. Remove the 14 bolts and 3 nuts.

Torque:
Bolt A: 175 N.m (1,784 kgf-cm, 129 ft-lbf)
Bolt B: 147 N.m (1,500 kgf-cm, 109 ft-lbf)
Bolt C: 225 N.m (2,305 kgf-cm, 167 ft-lbf)
Bolt D: 64 N.m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)
Bolt E: 61 N.m (620 kgf-cm, 45 ft-lbf)
Nut F: 57 N.m (580 kgf-cm, 42 ft-lbf)

d. Remove the front sub-frame and lower suspension arm.




18. REMOVE STARTER
a. Disconnect the connector and wire from the starter.
b. Remove the set bolt of the starter from the lower side.

Torque: 39 N.m (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft-lbf)

c. Remove the starter.
19. JACK UP TRANSAXLE SLIGHTLY
Using a transmission jack, support the transaxle.




20. DISCONNECT ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING BRACKET FROM ENGINE LEFT MOUNTING INSULATOR
Remove the 2 set bolts of the engine left mounting bracket from the transaxle lower side.

Torque: 56 N.m (570 kgf-cm, 41 ft-lbf)




21. 4A-FE Engine:
REMOVE STIFFENER PLATE AND TRANSAXLE LOWER SIDE MOUNTING BOLT
a. Remove the 5 bolts and stiffener plate.

Torque: 23 N.m (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft-lbf)

INSTALLATION HINT:
- Install the stiffener plate and 5 bolts, temporarily tighten the No.1 bolt.
- Torque the 5 bolts in order shown.
b. Remove the bolt of transaxle lower side.

Torque: 46 N.m (470 kgf-cm, 34 ft-lbf)




22. 7A-FE Engine:
REMOVE TRANSAXLE LOWER SIDE MOUNTING BOLT
Remove the 4 bolts.

Torque:
Bolt A: 23 N.m (230 kgf-cm, 17 ft-lbf)
Bolt B: 46 N.m (470 kgf-cm, 34 ft-lbf)

23. REMOVE TRANSAXLE
Lower the engine left side and remove the transaxle from the engine.

INSTALLATION HINT:
- Align the input shaft with the clutch disc and install the transaxle to the engine.
- Temporarily tighten the transaxle mounting bolts.

TRANSAXLE INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

HINT: After installation, check and inspect items as follows.
- Front wheel alignment
- Road test the vehicle.
