Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
1. ALLOW THE ENGINE TO WARM UP TO NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE.
2. CONNECT TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
- Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.
- Connect the Toyota hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool to the DLC3.
- Refer to the Toyota hand-held tester or OBDII scan tool operator's manual for further details.
3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO ENGINE
- Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the high-tension cord for No.4 cylinder.
4. CHECK IDLE SPEED
- Race the engine speed at 2,500 rpm for approx. 90 seconds.
- Check the idle speed.
Idle speed: 700 ± 50 rpm
5. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING
- Using a jumper wire (or SST 09843-18020), connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1.
- Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Ignition timing @ idle: 8 - 12° BTDC
(Transmission in neutral position)
- Remove the jumper from the DLC1.
6. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
- With the jumper removed, re-check ignition timing.
Ignition timing @ idle: 7 - 24° BTDC
(Transmission in neutral position)
HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 7° and 24°.
7. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT FROM ENGINE
8. DISCONNECT TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBDII SCAN TOOL
