Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection

IGNITION TIMING INSPECTION

NOTE: Perform the following ignition timing checks w/ the cooling fan OFF and transmission in a neutral position.

1. WARM UP ENGINE.
- Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

2. CONNECT TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL.
- Remove the fuse cover on the instrument panel.

DLC3 Is Located Inside Of The Fuse Panel:




- Connect the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3.
- Please refer to the TOYOTA hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.

3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT TO IGNITION CABLE NUMBER 1.
4. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING.

Terminals In DLC1:




- Using a jumper wire or SST, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the DLC1. (SST 09843-18020)
- After engine speed is kept at 1,000 - 1,500 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.



- Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.

Ignition timing: 10° BTDC @ idle

- Remove the jumper from the DLC1.

5. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING.
- Check that the ignition timing advances.

Ignition timing: 7 - 17° BTDC @ idle

HINT: The timing mark should move in a range between 7° and 17°.

6. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT.
7. DISCONNECT TOYOTA HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL.
