Transaxle Removal

Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

INSTALLATION HINT: After installation, check and inspect items as follows.
- Road test the vehicle.
- Rear wheel alignment




1. REMOVE STRUT BAR
Remove the 2 bolts, nuts and strut bar.

Torque:
Bolt: 73 N-m (740 kgf-cm, 54 ft-lbf)
Nut: 80 N-m (820 kgf-cm, 59 ft-lbf)

2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY WITH AIR HOSE
3. REMOVE LH ENGINE MOUNTING STAY
Remove the 2 bolts and LH mounting stay.

Torque:
Body side: 73 N-m (740 kgf-cm, 54 ft-lbf)
Transaxle side: 25 N-m (250 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf)




4. REMOVE STARTER
a. Disconnect the connector and wire from the starter.
b. Remove the 2 bolts and starter.

Torque: 39 N-m (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft-lbf)

5. DISCONNECT BACK-UP LIGHT SWITCH CONNECTOR AND GROUND CABLE
6. DISCONNECT VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CONNECTOR




7. REMOVE TRANSAXLE UPPER SIDE MOUNTING BOLTS
Remove the transaxle 3 mounting bolts.
8. REMOVE REAR WHEELS
9. RAISE VEHICLE

NOTE: Be sure the vehicle is securely supported.

10. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
Remove the 5 bolts and under cover.
11. DRAIN TRANSAXLE OIL

Oil grade: API GL-3, GL-4 or GL-5
Viscosity: SAE 75W - 90
Standard Type
Capacity: 4.2 liters (4.4 US qts, 3.7 Imp. qts)
Viscous Coupling LSD Type
Capacity: 3.9 liters (4.1 US qts, 3.4 Imp. qts)

12. REMOVE LH AND RH DRIVE SHAFTS




13. DISCONNECT CONTROL CABLES
a. Remove the 2 clips and washers.
b. Remove the 2 retainers from the cables.
c. Disconnect the control cables.




14. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE
a. Remove the 3 nuts from the exhaust manifold.

Torque: 62 N-m (830 kgf-cm, 46 ft-lbf)




b. Remove the 4 bolts.

Torque:
Bolt A: 19 N-m (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft-lbf)
Bolt B: 43 N-m (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft-lbf)

c. Remove the front exhaust pipe and 2 gaskets.

15. INSTALL ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE




16. REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND BRACKET

Torque:
Transaxle side: 77 N-m (790 kgf-cm, 57 ft-lbf)
Body side: 73 N-m (740 kgf-cm, 54 ft-lbf)
Through bolt: 96 N-m (980 kgf-cm, 71 ft-lbf)

17. REMOVE CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER
Remove the 2 bolts and clutch release cylinder.

Torque: 12 N-m (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf)




18. REMOVE REAR ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND BRACKET

Torque:
Transaxle side: 77 N-m (790 kgf-cm, 57 ft-lbf)
Crossmember side: 84 N-m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)
Through bolt: 87 N-m (890 kgf-cm, 64 ft-lbf)




19. REMOVE SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER
a. Remove the lower arm with the bolt from the suspension crossmember.

Torque: 132 N-m (1,350 kgf-cm, 98 ft-lbf)




b. Remove the bolt, nut and suspension arm from the rear axle hub.

Torque: 103 N-m (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf)

c. Remove the bolt and disconnect the ABS speed sensor bracket from the rear suspension crossmember.




d. Remove the 4 bolts and suspension crossmember.

Torque: 113 N-m (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft-lbf)




20. REMOVE ENGINE LH MOUNTING SET BOLTS
a. Raise the transaxle and engine slightly with a jack and wooden block in between.
b. Remove the 3 bolts.

Torque: 64 N-m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)

21. REMOVE STIFFENER PLATE
Remove the 3 bolts and stiffener plate.

Torque: 37 N-m (380 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf)

22. REMOVE REAR END PLATE
Remove the 4 bolts and rear end plate.

Torque: 9.3 N-m (95 kgf-cm, 82 in-lbf)




23. REMOVE TRANSAXLE
a. Remove the transaxle mounting bolts from the engine.

Torque:
Bolt A: 64 N-m (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf)
Bolt B: 46 N-m (470 kgf-cm, 34 ft-lbf)

b. Lower the engine left side and remove the transaxle from the engine.
