Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

FRONT TWC REPLACEMENT:




CAUTION: Check that the TWC is cool before handling it.




1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVERS.
2. REMOVE RIGHT-HAND ENGINE HOOD SIDE PANEL.
3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE.
4. REMOVE NO.1 AND NO.2 INTAKE AIR CONNECTORS.
5. If equipped with Cruise Control System:
DISCONNECT CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATOR LINKAGE FROM BODY.
6. REMOVE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ELECTRIC COOLING FAN.
7. DISCONNECT A/C COMPRESSOR FROM ENGINE.




8. REMOVE TAILPIPE AND FRONT EXHAUST PIPE.
9. REMOVE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET, INSULATOR AND CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER.
10. REMOVE FRONT TWC.



- Remove the 4 bolts and right-hand TWC stay.
- Remove the 3 bolts and left-hand TWC stay.
- Remove the 3 bolts, 2 nuts, TWC, gasket, retainer and cushion.




- Remove the 9 bolts and 2 heat insulators from the TWC.

11. RE-INSTALL FRONT TWC.
- Install the 2 heat insulators to the TWC with the 9 bolts.



- Place the cushion, retainer and a new gasket on the TWC.
- Install the TWC with the 3 bolts and 2 nuts.

Torque: 29 Nm (22 ft.lb)

- Install the right-hand TWC stay with the 4 bolts.

Torque: 59 Nm (43 ft.lb)

- Install the left-hand TWC stay with the 3 bolts.

Torque: 59 Nm (43 ft.lb)

12. RE-INSTALL CLUTCH RELEASE CYLINDER, FRONT ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET AND INSULATOR
13. RE-INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE AND TAILPIPE.
14. RE-INSTALL A/C COMPRESSOR.
15. RE-INSTALL ENGINE COMPARTMENT ELECTRIC COOLING FAN.
16. If equipped with Cruise Control System:
RE-INSTALL CRUISE CONTROL ACCELERATOR LINKAGE.
17. RE-INSTALL NO.1 AND NO.2 INTAKE AIR CONNECTORS.
18. RE-INSTALL AIR CLEANER HOSE.
19. RE-INSTALL right-hand ENGINE HOOD SIDE PANEL.
20. RE-INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVERS.


REAR TWC REPLACEMENT:



1. REMOVE TAILPIPE AND FRONT EXHAUST PIPE (REAR TWC).
2. RE-INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE (REAR TWC) AND TAILPIPE.
