Component Tests and General Diagnostics

FUEL PUMP INSPECTION
1. REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION.
2. REMOVE FLOOR SERVICE HOLE COVER.
3. DISCONNECT FUEL PUMP & SENDER GAUGE CONNECTOR.
4. INSPECT FUEL PUMP.
(A) Check Fuel Pump Resistance.

- Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals 4 and 5.

Resistance @ 20°C (68°F): 0.2 - 3.0 Ohms

- If the resistance is not as specified, replace the fuel pump.

(B) Inspect Fuel Pump Operation.

- Connect the positive (+) lead from the battery to terminal 4 of the connector, and the negative (-) lead to terminal 5.
- Check that the fuel pump operates.

NOTICE:
- These tests must be done quickly (within 10 seconds) to prevent the coil burning out.
- Keep the fuel pump as far away from the battery as possible.
- Always do the switching at the battery side.

- If operation is not as specified, replace the fuel pump or lead wire.

5. RECONNECT FUEL PUMP & SENDER GAUGE CONNECTOR.
6. REINSTALL FLOOR SERVICE HOLE COVER.
7. REINSTALL REAR SEAT CUSHION.

FUEL PRESSURE TEST
1. CHECK THE BATTERY POSITIVE VOLTAGE IS ABOVE 12.0 VOLTS.
- Disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery.

2. REMOVE THE UNION BOLT AND 2 GASKETS, AND DISCONNECT THE FUEL INLET HOSE FROM THE FUEL FILTER OUTLET.

CAUTION:
- Put a shop towel under the fuel filter.
- Slowly loosen the union bolt.

3. INSTALL THE FUEL INLET HOSE AND PRESSURE GAUGE TO THE FUEL FILTER OUTLET WITH THE 3 GASKETS AND UNION BOLT.
- (SST 09268-45012 - EFI fuel pressure gauge).

Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lb)

- Wipe off any splattered gasoline.

4. USING A JUMPER WIRE, CONNECT TERMINALS "FP" AND "+B" OF DLC 1.
5. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE TO THE BATTERY.
6. TURN THE IGNITION SWITCH ON.
7. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE.

Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)

- If pressure is high, replace the fuel pressure regulator.

- If pressure is low, check these parts:
- Fuel hoses and connections
- Fuel pump
- Fuel filter
- Fuel pressure regulator

8. REMOVE THE JUMPER WIRE FROM DLC 1.
9. START THE ENGINE.

10. DISCONNECT THE VACUUM SENSING HOSE FROM THE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR, AND PLUG THE HOSE END.
11. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE AT IDLE.

Fuel pressure: 265 - 304 kPa (38 - 44 psi)

12. RECONNECT THE VACUUM SENSING HOSE TO THE FUEL PRE SURE REGULATOR.

13. MEASURE THE FUEL PRESSURE AT IDLE.

Fuel pressure: 226 - 265 kPa (33 - 38 psi)

- If pressure is not as specified, check the vacuum sensing hose and fuel pressure regulator.

14. STOP THE ENGINE.
15. CHECK RESIDUAL FUEL PRESSURE.
- Check that the fuel pressure remains as specified for 5 minutes after the engine has stopped.

Fuel pressure: 147 kPa (21 psi) or more

- If pressure is not as specified, check the fuel pump, pressure regulator and/or injectors.

16. REMOVE PRESSURE GAUGE.
- Disconnect the negative (-) terminal cable from the battery and carefully remove the pressure gauge to prevent gasoline from splashing.
17. RECONNECT THE FUEL INLET HOSE WITH 2 NEW GASKETS AND THE UNION BOLT.

Torque: 29 Nm (300 kgf.cm; 21 ft.lb)

18. RECONNECT THE NEGATIVE (-) TERMINAL CABLE TO THE BATTERY.
19. CHECK FOR FUEL LEAKAGE.
