Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
The Engine RPM Sensor produces an output pulse (NE signal) to the Engine Control Module (ECM) four times per Distributor revolution. The ECM uses this signal to determine Top Dead Center position for each cylinder.
OPERATION
Current from the ECM creates a magnetic field in the pick-up coil. When the rotor tooth passes through the magnetic field, the disturbance is detectable by the ECM.
