Removal and Installation

DISTRIBUTOR REMOVAL

1. Disconnect Negative terminal cable from Battery.

CAUTION (w/ SRS): Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the Ignition Switch is turned to the "LOCK" position and the Negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the Battery.

2. Remove air intake connector.

Remove the 3 bolts and air intake connector.

3. Disconnect Distributor connectors.

4. Disconnect high-tension cords from Distributor Cap.

Removing Spark Plug Wires From Distributor:

a. Using a screwdriver, lift up the lock claw and disconnect the holder from the Distributor Cap.

Removing Spark Plug Wires From Distributor:

b. Disconnect the high-tension cord at the grommet. Do not pull on the high-tension cords.

NOTE: Pulling on or bending the cords may damage the conductor inside.

5. Remove Distributor.

a. Remove the 2 bolts, and pull out the Distributor.

b. Remove the 0-ring from the Distributor Housing.

- Reverse procedure to install, using a new O-ring seal.

DISTRIBUTOR INSTALLATION

1. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC compression.

Turn the crankshaft clockwise, and position the slit of the Camshaft as shown in the illustration.

2. Install Distributor.

a. Install a new 0-ring to the Distributor Housing.

b. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the 0-ring.

c. Align the cutout portion of the coupling with the groove of the housing.

d. Insert the Distributor, aligning the center of the flange with that of the bolt hole on the Cylinder Head.

e. Lightly tighten the 2 bolts.

3. Connect high-tension cords to Distributor Cap.

Removing Spark Plug Wires From Distributor:

a. Install the grommet portion into the terminal hole of the Distributor Cap.

b. Align the spline of the Distributor Cap with the spline of the holder, and slide on the holder.

Installing Spark Plug Wires In Distributor:

NOTE: Check that the holder is correctly installed to the grommet and Distributor Cap as shown in the illustration.

c. Check that the lock claw of the holder is engaged by lightly pulling the holder.

d. Check that the high-tension cords are connected as shown in the illustration.

Firing order: 1-3-4-2

4. Connect distributor connectors.

5. Install air intake connector.

Install the air intake connector with the 3 bolts.

6. Connect Negative terminal cable to Battery.

7. Warm up engine.

Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

8. Connect tachometer.

Connection Of Tachometer:

Connect the tester probe of a tachometer to terminal IG(-) of the Data Link Connector (DLC) 1.

NOTE:

^ Never allow the tachometer terminal to touch ground as it could result in damage to the Igniter end/or Ignition Coil.

^ As some tachometers are not compatible with this ignition system, we recommend that you confirm the compatibility of your unit before use.

9. Adjust ignition timing.

DLC 1 Location And SST Used To Connect TE1 And E1:

a. Using SST, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of DLC 1. (SST 09843-18020)

b. Check the idle speed.

Idle speed: 750 rpm + 50 rpm (w/Cooling fan OFF and transmission in neutral position)

HINT: Decrease the rpm after the engine maintains a speed of the 1,000 - 1,300 rpm for 5 seconds.

Timing Marks:

c. Using a timing light. check the ignition timing.

Ignition timing: 10° BTDC @ idle (w/Cooling fan OFF and transmission in neutral position)

Adjusting Timing:

d. Loosen the 2 bolts, and adjust by turning the Distributor.

e. Tighten the 2 bolts, and recheck the ignition timing.

Torque: 17 Nm (13 ft.lb)

DLC 1 Location And SST:

f. Disconnect the SST from DLC 1. (SST 09843-18020)

10. Further check ignition timing.

Timing Marks:

Check the ignition timing advance.

Ignition timing: 6 - 18° BTDC @ idle (w/Cooling fan OFF and transmission in neutral position)

HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 60 and 180.

11. Disconnect tachometer and timing light from engine.
