Oxygen Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE / OPERATION
The oxygen sensor is installed in the exhaust system. The oxygen sensor monitors the oxygen content of the exhaust gases. A voltage signal from the oxygen sensor informs the ECM as to the oxygen content of the exhaust gas (lean or rich condition). The ECM will interpret the voltage signal and compensate for the indicated condition.
An internal heating coil serves to bring the oxygen sensor up to operating temperature quickly.
