Basic Fuel System Checks

FUEL SYSTEM BASIC CHECKS
When testing for a fuel system problem, don't forget to "Check the Basics".
1. Is there fuel in the tank? Fuel gauges may be inaccurate. Remove the Fuel Filler Cap and shake the vehicle while listening for fuel "sloshing" sound.
2. Check fuel quality. Old or polluted fuel burns poorly or not at all. Put a fuel sample in a clear glass container. Is the odor OK ? Allow it to settle for a few moments. Check the color, old fuel will turn darker colored. Check for separation. Fuel that is "polluted" with water will separate. A visible line will form between the two fluids. perform the Alcohol-In-Fuel Test. Alcohol In Fuel Test
3. Visually inspect the fuel lines and fitting for leakage or damage. Look for undercarriage damage that may have crushed a fuel line.
4. Check the Fuel Filter. A clogged filter may not allow fuel to pass through it.
5. With a test light, perform a quick test of the fuel pump fuse. Be sure to check at "out" side connector of the fuse for power. Corrosion in the connector can block current, even though the fuse looks good.
