Checking the Basics
BASIC INSPECTION PROCEDURE1. Is battery voltage 11.0 volts or more when the engine is stopped?
^ Yes: Go to step 2.
^ No: Charge or replace battery.
2. Will the engine crank?
^ Yes: proceed to step 3.
^ No: Proceed to the system or component indicated by the matrix chart in Powertrain Management Testing / Diagnosis By Symptom.

3. Does engine start?
^ Yes: proceed to step 4.
^ No: Go to step 7.
4. Check air filter.
- Remove air filter.
- Visually check that the air filter is not excessively dirty or oily.
^ If OK proceed to step 5.
^ If not OK: Clean or replace air filter element if necessary.
5. Check idle speed.
Idle Speed: 750 ± 50 rpm
^ If OK proceed to step 6.
^ If not OK proceed to the system or component indicated by the matrix chart in Powertrain Management Testing / Diagnosis By Symptom.
6. Check ignition timing.
Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle
^ If OK proceed to the system or component indicated by the matrix chart in Powertrain Management Testing / Diagnosis By Symptom.
^ If not OK go to Ignition System Adjustments
7. Check fuel pressure.
Refer to Fuel Pressure Test Procedures.
Component Tests and General Diagnostics
^ If OK proceed to step 8.
^ If not OK go to Fuel Pump Inspection Procedures

8. Check that spark is present.
Perform the Spark Test as described under Ignition System Testing Procedures.

^ If OK proceed to the matrix chart in Powertrain Management Testing / Diagnosis By Symptom.
^ If not OK go to Ignition System Test
