Inspection Procedure

PROCEDURE
1. Check output condition of diagnostic trouble code 51.
(a) Connect terminals TE2 and E1 of data link connector 1.
(b) Turn ignition switch ON.
(c) Crank the engine.

(d) Connect terminals TE1 and E1 of data link connector 1 (DLC1).

Location Of MIL ("CHECK" Engine Light):

(e) Check if diagnostic trouble code "51" is output when the shift lever is in the P and D shift positions.

Results Of Test For DTC 51:

^ If OK, proceed to next circuit inspection shown in the matrix chart in Diagnosis by Symptom under "Powertrain Management Testing Procedures".
Testing and Inspection
^ If NOT OK (Type I), proceed to step 2.
^ If NOT OK, (Type II) proceed to step 3.
2. Check for open in harness and connector between engine control module and park/neutral position switch.
^ If OK, check and replace engine control module.
^ If not OK, repair or replace harness or connector.
3. Check park/neutral position switch.
^ If OK, check and replace engine control module.
^ If not OK, replace park/neutral position switch.
