Fail Safe Operation
If any of the following codes is recorded, the Engine Control Module enters fail-safe mode and substitutes predetermined values to replace incorrect sensor inputs.DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 14
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
Fuel cut.
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
1 IGF signal detected in consecutive 2 ignition signals (IGT) (4 ignition signals for California spec. vehicles).
DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 16
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
Torque control prohibited.
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
Returned to normal condition.
DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 22
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
THW is fixed at 80°C (176°F).
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
Returned to normal condition.
DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 24
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
THA is fixed at 20°C (68°F).
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
Returned to normal condition.
DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 31

Closed Throttle Position Switch ON 3.3 milliseconds.
Closed Throttle Position Switch OFF 6.1 milliseconds.
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:

DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 41
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
VTA1 is fixed at 0°.
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
The following conditions must be repeated at least 2 times consecutively.
When closed throttle position switch is ON:
Terminal VTA voltage is between 0.1 volts and 0.95 volts.
DATA TROUBLE CODE NO. 52
FAIL-SAFE OPERATION:
Maximum timing retardation.
DEACTIVATION CONDITIONS:
Ignition Switch OFF.
BACK-UP FUNCTION
If there is trouble with the program in the ECM and ignition signals (IGT) are not output from the processor, the ECM controls fuel injection and ignition timing at predetermined levels as a back-up function to make it possible to continue to operate the vehicle. The ignition timing is fixed at 5° BTDC, without relation to the engine speed. If the engine is controlled by the back-up function, the malfunction indicator lamp lights up to warn the driver of the malfunction but the diagnostic trouble code is not output.
