Reading Diagnostic Trouble Codes

"CHECK" ENGINE LAMP Or Malfunction Indicator Light Location:





Trouble codes can be read through the "check engine" light in the instrument panel. To obtain accurate results the following initial conditions must be present:

a. Battery voltage above 11 volts.
b. Throttle valve in fully closed position.
c. Transmission in Neutral.
d. All accessories OFF.
e. Engine at normal operating temperature.

After conditions have been met, proceed with the following procedure to extract codes:

Installing Jumper Wire:





1. Turn ignition to the ON position.
2. Using a jumper wire or Toyota SST #09843-18020, jumper data link connector terminals TE1 and E1.

No Faults Present:





3. Trouble codes will be displayed as flashes of the Check Engine light.
4. If no malfunction is present the light will flash steadily about twice per second.

Reading Trouble Codes:





5. If a fault is present, the flashes will display the coresponding code number as shown.
6. If more than one code is stored in memory, they will display one after another beginning with the lowest number code.
7. After all codes are displayed, there will be approximately a 4.5 second pause before redisplay.
