Ignition Timing: Adjustments

Fig. 207 Connecting Tachometer:





1. Start engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Connect a tachometer test probe to terminal IG (-) of the check connector. Fig. 207

NOTE: Never let the tachometer lead touch ground as this could cause damage to the igniter and/or coil. Be sure to check that your tachometer is compatible with this ignition system. Consult the operating manual for your instrument.

3. Using a service wire, connect terminals T and E1 of the check connector located near the air cleaner. Fig. 208
4. Check idle speed.

Idle Speed: 800 rpm

5. Using a timing light, verify that the timing mark on the timing cover is aligned with the mark on the crankshaft pulley. Fig. 210

Ignition Timing: 10° BTDC at idle

6. If not as specified, loosen distributor hold down bolt and rotate housing to align marks.
7. Tighten the distributor bolt and recheck the ignition timing.
8. Remove service wire.

9. Disconnect the air control valve (ACV) connector. Fig. 209
10. Check idle advance ignition timing.

Ignition Timing: 10° or more BTDC at idle

11. Reconnect ACV connector.
