TITLE CELICA CONVERTIBLE TOP REPAIR/REPLACEMENT ADDITION
An elastic strip has been added to the top stack bows to prevent the hinge mechanism from possibly pinching or cutting the top material when the top is lowered. When replacing the convertible top for any reason, the following procedures should be added to the top replacement procedures for all 1987 to 1989 model year Celica Convertibles. The repair kit must be ordered in addition to the replacement top.
PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE:
Celica Convertibles with an ASC production date of 4/87 and later have the elastic strips. (The ASC production date is on either the left door or "B" pillar).
ELASTIC STRIP INSTALLATION
Tools necessary: Staple Gun
Materials necessary:

Convertible repair kit* 02275-86101
*Kit contains: Two elastic strips (3" x 13") Twenty four stainless steel staples (0.5" x 0.314") (Stainless steel staples must be used).

Instructions:
1. Following the correct lowering procedure, lower the top to the halfway position shown in Figure 1.
(Note: if attempting to retrofit the elastic strips with the top in place, it may be necessary to remove the top from the No. 1 bow to gain access to the No. 2 and No. 3 bows).

2. The elastic strips are to be positioned between the outboard ends of the No. 2 and 3 bows about 2-1/2 inches from the bow ends as shown in Figure 2 (Centered directly above the hinge mechanism of the top stack).
3. Insure that the elastic strips measure exactly 13 inches in length. Secure the ends of the elastic strip to the tack strips on each bow with six staples at each end.
Note: These steps are in addition to the procedure required for top replacement. If the top is already in place, it may be necessary to partially remove the top to fit the elastic strips. (See the Celica Convertible Repair Manual Supplement for this procedure)
4. Continue with top installation as normal.
FINAL ADJUSTMENT:
It is important that the Down-Stop light adjustment be performed at this time. Please see the Celica convertible Repair Manual Supplement page 14-4 for this procedure. The specification that should be used is 40-45 mm.
