TITLE: IMPROVED RESERVOIR FOR '88 -'89 CELICA CONVERTIBLE HYDRAULIC PUMP
Under certain conditions of high heat and humidity, the hydraulic oil may leak from the pump and reservoir joint. Please refer to the instructions listed below for replacement procedure.
I. REMOVAL PROCEDURE:
1. Open trunk and using a # 2 Phillips screwdriver remove the 2 snap screws (top and bottom), on left side trunk trim panel.
2. Pull trim panel away from side of vehicle and push panel forward toward center of vehicle as far as possible to move it out of the way without damaging the panel.
3. Disconnect wire connector to hydraulic pump to prevent operation of hydraulic pump.
Important: Replace only pages 1, 2 and 5 with revised pages. All other information is correct.
4. With the 1/2" open end wrench remove bolt attaching hydraulic pump to vehicle.
5. Using a screwdriver pry hydraulic pump assembly up off of the trunk floor.
6. With the 3/16" Allen wrench loosen and remove reservoir filler plug located on the top of the reservoir.
7. Place a clean cloth under hydraulic pump assembly to absorb any spilled hydraulic fluid.
8. Drain hydraulic fluid into a clean container by carefully tipping hydraulic pump assembly. Hydraulic fluid is to be reused.
9. With the 1/4" drive ratchet, 8" extension and 1/4" socket, remove four reservoir attaching screws.
10. Gently rock reservoir from side to side to remove from hydraulic pump.
11. Remove reservoir O-ring from hydraulic pump.
Note: Do not use tools to remove O-ring as it may damage the Oring groove. Pinch O-ring with fingers to form a loop, grab loop with finger and remove from hydraulic pump.
12. Cover end of pump with a clean cloth to prevent dirt from entering pump or hydraulic system.
II. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
1. Install new O-ring on hydraulic pump.
2. Apply a thin coat of hydraulic fluid on O-ring and install new reservoir on hydraulic pump.
Note: Make sure filler plug opening faces up.
3. Install reservoir attaching screws (4). Torque 10-15 in.lbs. (11-17 kg-cm).
4. Install hydraulic pump. Note:
^ Be careful not to damage hydraulic lines.
^ Be sure pump rubber mounting feet are securely engaged in holes in mounting pad.
^ Install bolt. To start, push down on head of bolt to engage threads in mounting hole. Torque 40-58 in.lbs. (46-66 kg-cm).
5. Fill reservoir with hydraulic fluid saved during removal procedure.
FIGURE 8:
6. Check reservoir level. Fig 8.
Add 10W or 10W-30 oil if additional oil is required to bring the level to the appropriate mark as shown in Fig. 8. Do not use automatic transmission oil.
7. Install reservoir filler plug. Torque 20-25 in.lbs (23-29 kg-cm).
8. Check top operation.
Note:
^ Cycle top up and down three times.
^ Check for air in lines. If air bubbles over 4" are visible in the hydraulic lines, proceed to section -- III. BLEEDING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
10. Reinstall left hand trunk trim panel and replace 2 snap screws.
III. BLEEDING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM:
1. Make sure reservoir is filled to the lower mark.
2. Open top manually by pushing on number one bow until it is 1 foot from header.
3. For pumps with T-handle by-pass valve, open valve two full turns. For pumps with black plastic handle, open valve 1/4. Manually retract top to the down position.
4. Rock power switch back and forth two times to clear air in by-pass valve.
5. Close by-pass valve and cycle top up and down two times with power switch.
6. Check oil level with top down. If needed, add 10W or 10W-30 oil to the upper fill line on reservoir. Clean and install filler plug. Torque 20-25 in.lbs (23-29 kg-cm).
7. Close top. Return to step 10 Section II.
PRODUCTION EFFECTIVE:
The improved parts are effective with vendor date code 8236 and higher. The date code is found on the motor end of the pump assembly.
